They were mechanical and operated off the engine.

In the ‘80s they introduced electric fuel pumps, placed in the fuel tanks.

The last one I put on myself in an old Chevy truck. Fifteen bucks and a couple of tools. LOL. I really think FORD or CHEVY are missing out by not making a new little truck with no frills Five on the floor, and all the old technology. ... A farmer truck. IMO that’s why there are still so many of the older model trucks still in the road.
