Iran’s supreme leader weeps over slain general’s casket, as partisan tensions intensify in U.S. over Trump airstrike
Iran’s usually stone-faced supreme leader wept over the casket of the country’s slain top military general during an enormous funeral procession Monday, as partisan tensions flared in the U.S. over whether President Trump was justified in ordering the airstrike that killed the notorious commander.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his face streaked with tears, prayed over the remains of Gen. Qassem Soleimani and hailed the fallen Quds Force leader as a “living martyr” during a somber state ceremony at Tehran University. The funeral services also honored a group of Iran-backed Iraqi militia fighters who died with Soleimani as his convoy was hit by a U.S. drone missile outside a Baghdad airport last week.
“Oh God, you took their spirits out of their bodies as they were rolling their blood for you and were martyred in your way,” Khamenei said as the crowd moaned.
