A lot of those Germans never made it out, if you catch my drift.
I just recently read of that Czech expulsion in the last year or two, and here in FR. Reading a book right now called “Embracing defeat” about Japan after the surrender. The Germans and other understood defeat as a concept, but the Japanese were shaken to their core ina way we can scarcely understand.
Reminds me of Jap POWs who started working for us. In their mind they were so dishonored they could never go home. They considered themselves already dead and started their new existence.
