If he remains unconvicted, he can appoint anyone to any open position and the Senate can concur. His impeachment is a talking point to besmirch him.

Think the point being made is that no Dems will agree to vote for any Supreme Court Justice if the charge never goes to the Senate and he’s never acquitted or, even if he is, if the acquittal is defined as political and therefore unfair and immoral. The charge of illegitimate president will be thrown over and over and over again until the public starts believing it through repetition and, with a later Democratic Senate, they have the reason why they impeach any Justice the Republican Senate passed through.

Perhaps there will be enough defections to flip the House.
I am pretty sure there is enough corruption that will be dealt with to put them in their place.
This is more than a political thing.
