Richard Jewell Posts Worst Wide Opening for Clint Eastwood With Just $4.7 Million
Richard Jewell was a passion project for Clint Eastwood, but this weekend it became the Hollywood legends worst wide opening weekend in his directorial career with just $4.7 million.
Released by Warner Bros. on 2,502 screens, Richard Jewell was projected by trackers to earn a $9-10 million opening this weekend instead, it is opening to half that amount. To find a wide release that low in Eastwoods career, you have to go all the way back to 1997, when Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil grossed a $5.2 million opening.

The weekend isn’t over yet. Don’t they count Sunday as part of the weekend?
That’s exactly what I’ll be doing - waiting to watch it at home.
The movie theater is too expensive these days.
That’s because I didn’t get there yet. If it is what everyone says, MANY will want to see this one!
I really enjoyed it.
just saw it! good movie
Actually, they do.
In this case the American public simply don’t know about the Atlanta bombing and Richard. Simply no emotional or intellectual connection.
Not enough hype, not enough explosions, no strong empowered female lead that takes charge. . the usual nonsense.
Exactly!! I only saw about two adverts. . .
“Face it, 99% of America really has no interest in this type of movie.”
The daily news has much more intrigue, plot-twists and general drama, and much more powerful characters than a wronged security guard.
You hit the nail on the head: A over-weight nice White guy that is not a racist or reprobate of some sort, and the icing on the top, he was innocent and victimized by the authorities.
Yes! That’s right, so where do they get off ignoring Sundays receipts?
fact-based or historical movies are box office block busters.
Movies must have public screenings by late December to be eligible for Oscar consideration.
“Great acting and direction.”
Fifty-sixty years ago, who’d-a thought cute little Rowdy Yates would be doing his best work now?
“I doubt anyone under 30 remembers the case.”
Most people going to see this movie will go because Eastwood makes great movies but the subject matter is not going to stir many people that age.
I have a friend who is 40ish and he has no idea who Richard Jewell is. Heck, he didn’t even recall there was a bombing at the Atlanta games. I can’t say I blame him that much as it’s not an event that one hears about very often. I think the only time I have heard Richard Jewell mentioned over the years is when Hannity brings him up.
See you at the 6:40 pm showing...
Your comment is why I subscribe to Netflix’s DVD rental program.
For $13/month I get all the movies I want to watch, two at a time. When I mail the DVD’s back (N’flix pays postage both ways), I get the next two DVDs w/n two days.
I could watch six movies a week if I wanted. IMHO, this deal can’t be beat.
Nas Unappealing characters normally don’t translate to boxoffice. Next week is Star Wars, so it ain’t going to be a big Clint movie
It is tougher to find. To compare, Frozen 2 opened up on 4400 screens.
"I would just like to say something, ladies and gentlemen.
Something that I think is very important. It is that, you, we -
we own this country. We - we own it.
It is not you owning it, and not politicians owning it.Politicians are employees of ours."
Clint Eastwood
Just checked further. It turns out, Sunday is never counted as part of opening weekend.
This is the Christmas season. This movie is important, but it’s not a superhero fantasy blockbuster. Kudos to Eastwood for making this film.
