The confluence of these factors is apparently allowing the solar wind to rush relatively undeflected toward and into the earth’s polar regions. In other words, this actually is quite out of the ordinary.

A current produced magnetic field is a moving charged particle which can include both charged particles flying through space and impinging on the Earth and the sun's own mag field.
