It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it."

Two instances in 340 years is not a great data pool to work with, I will grant, but if you take a grab sample of other countries around the world youll see this could be much worse. I like that the author did go around the world and included all kinds of uprisings. Our government is currently the second longest surviving government in the world. Only the Vatican has been around longer. This gives us a skewed trust in government institutions as being more safe and secure than private institutions and families, but in reality that isn't the case. Just like we had a lot of trust in our banks, until they completely failed, our government institutions will run along and everything will appear to be fine, until one day they don't.

His advice is just right: buy and AR-15 (learn its manual of arms, of course) and several cases of ammo. Store AR and ammo away for the day you’ll need it!
And, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

Thank you. Bookmarked.
The author makes the solid point that an unlikely disaster (riot, revolution, volcanic eruption, zombie outbreak ) becomes much less unlikely over a lifetime. And it can be hard to see it coming in enough time to make it out, at a time when lots of other people are freaking out.
As an example, if you were a Jew in France in 1935, you might have scoffed at the idea that, within 10 years, you would have had to be prepared to take desperate steps to survive.

"Pretend youre someone with your eyes on the horizon. What would you be looking for, exactly? Increasing partisanship. Civil disorder. Coup rhetoric. A widening wealth gap. A further entrenching oligarchy. Dysfunctional governance. The rise of violent extremist ideologies such as Nazism and Communism. Violent street protests. People marching with masks and dressing like the Italian Blackshirts. Attempts at large scale political assassination. Any one of those might not necessarily be the canary in the coal mine, but all of them in aggregate might be alarming to someone with their eyes on the horizon. Someone with disproportionate faith in the state is naturally inclined to disregard these sorts of events as a cognitive bias, while someone with little faith in the state might take these signs to mean they should buy a few more boxes of ammunition."
We've seen several of these in the past few years: Antifa, some students at college campuses act like Mao's Red Guards, etc.
