Tuesday, the first set of College Football Playoff rankings came out. Saturday, two of the top four teams in those rankings lost. With No. 4 Penn State losing at No. 17 Minnesota and No. 3 Alabama losing at home to No. 2 LSU, 2019 became a first in the playoff era. It was the first time that two of the top four teams in the first playoff rankings had lost on the ensuing weekend.

WOW the 2 big games going into the weekend delivered.

Those Rowers looked like Athenian seamen rowing their Trireme for a deadly ramming attack into the Nittany Lion. The combination of Gopher QB Tanner Morgan and WR Rashod Bateman torched the PSU secondary for 203 yards. Morgan average 17 yards per pass attempt. It was Penn State who choked as Sean Clifford threw 3 picks including a game deciding one as PSU tried to go in for a game winning score. If Penn State can get torched like that against Minnesota then what will THE Ohio State University do to them.

Whatever one thinks of LSU they sure have consistently delivered the most exciting games of the year. LSU was the battle tested team and it showed. Tua perhaps due to rust had a costly fumble in the red zone early in the game and a pick. LSU got a big assist from the refs when Randy Moss' son was clearly out of bounds before making a spectacular catch. The refs ruled that he was pushed out of bounds allowing him to make the catch; the push out of bounds is not reviewable so the review was whether Moss had inbounds when he made the catch. Given LSUs schedule they might be a lock for a playoff bid even if they lose in the SEC Championship game against UGa.

Joe Burrow was given a conquers welcome in Baton Rogue

Video

I think Louisiana should give the honor of a Triumph to Burrow. He could be ride a chariot being pulled by elephants just like Pompey, and 'Bama cheerleaders in cages.

Arkansas fans were demanding Chad Morris be fired at halftime as Western Kentucky humiliated Arkansas. Debate whether he or Willie Taggart were the worst coaching hires after the 2017 season.

IMO LSU should be #1, GEAUX TIGERS!!!

Btw, Arkansas fans aren’t the only ones calling for a new head coach. Appalachian State humiliated South Carolina at home last night. Fans are getting tired of Muschamp’s pressers.

- Ohio State will remain #1 but there’s no denying LSU should be #1.

- Georgia now has new life and squeaks into the top 4, beating out Oregon by a bit

- Next Saturday’s Georgia/Auburn contest will have a major impact on the rankings

- Baylor moves from #12 to #9, ahead of OU

- Minnesota moves from #17 to #11, maybe #10 and ahead OU who had to hold on for dear life last night

Arkansas has been an utter disaster...never would’ve thought Chad Morris would do a worse job than Bielema....pick up the phone and call Hugh Freeze!!

Carolina needs to call someone too, but not another out-of-retirement has been. Having said that, I don’t know who would want the job :0( Having said that, Carolina needs a new AD as well. Tanner was a great baseball coach but he has stunk it up in the AD chair.

The biggest winner is Clemson. They may end up as high as #3 in the next CFP rankings.

Congrats to Coach O. The man USC thought was not good enough for them, then gave the the job to Sarkissian, then to Kiffie.

and just for the record I am a USC fan, and argued at the time in favor of Coach O.

It was Penn State who choked as Sean Clifford threw 3 picks including a game deciding one as PSU tried to go in for a game winning score.

Agreed, although I thought that last pick should have been a pass interference call. From the angles I saw, it looks like the intended target was the short receiver, who came stumbling into the frame a step late because he had a Minnesota defender riding his back. The pass carried through towards a deeper receiver, to whom it was badly underthrown, and another Minnesota guy made a nice sliding grab just off the ground. There should probably have been a flag. That said, MN deserved the win. They were clearly the better team yesterday. Penn State looked plodding and predictable, and they were overmatched by MN's speed.

"Ohio State will remain #1 but there’s no denying LSU should be #1. "

I am a Buckeye fan. While OSU's talent per the recruiting rankings is as good as anybody's, their greatness has not been proven. When the Cincinnati Bearcats are your best opponent to date, you have no legitimate claim to being number one.

It’s amusing Ohio State is #1 and talked up so much when their biggest win has been Wisconsin. They’ve really had a cream puff schedule. Minnesota was bagged on for that but now they have a better win than OSU does.

One of the talking heads was mentioning Mike Leach taking the job in Arkansas. Leach in the SEC might be interesting.

It would have been cruel to deny Minnesota victory with the winning margin being that phantom TD PSU got after the play clock expired. That was just an awful call.

The Committee will go to some lengths not to appear to over-favor the SEC. Watch Oregon move to #4, giving the PAC12 real hope. Either Oregon or Utah is likely to end up with one loss, and the Committee will think long and hard before denying the PAC12 a spot in the playoffs on the one occasion every few years when they have a competitive team to offer.

By the same reasoning, expect Baylor and to a lesser extent Minnesota to get higher rankings than they deserve ... what’s the cost to the committee? Show some love. Give themselves some room to maneuver if it turns out that (against all odds) these teams finish as undefeated conference champs.

The SEC is overrated every year. Putting four SEC teams in the top 8 is ridiculous. They’re the best conference in college football, yes, but they are nowhere near as dominant as their homers want everyone to believe.

Go Buckeyes! Go Blue! Go Big 10!

"phantom TD PSU got after the play clock expired"

Absolutely agree.
How about the P.J. Fleck story. Taking obscure Western Michigan from unknown MAC to the national spotlight Cotton Bowl in four years, now writing U of Minnesota history.
They have a last week game with Wisconsin and a likely showdown with Ohio State for the Big Ten championship.

Row the boat.

I don’t know if it’s the money, the weather, Saban’s helicopter, or the CBS cameramen but they do have some pretty girls at Alabama.

The author of the article suggests this order:
Top 3: Ohio State, LSU, and Clemson
4. Georgia
5. Alabama
6. Oregon
7. Utah
8. Oklahoma
9. Minnesota
10. Penn State
He completely left the Gators out of the top 10 even though they were ranked #10 going into their game yesterday and handily beat Vanderbilt 56-0. I know, Vanderbilt is a cupcake, but no worse than any of those that Alabama has played and beat. I think Florida should still be in the top 10. It’s not like they had a week off.
