There's a good chance you hallucinated this week without ever knowing it

In the 1950s, researchers stumbled upon a new class of drugs that provided relief for those suffering from schizophrenia. These drugs were known as antipsychotics and, as the name suggests, they reduced symptoms like hallucinations and delusions — primarily by reducing the levels of dopamine in the brain. This led clinicians and scientists to argue that dopamine was linked to the experiences of psychotic symptoms, and a concerted research effort ensued, seeking to solve the puzzle of why excess dopamine might produce hallucinations.

Although it was later shown that increasing dopamine could produce hallucinations, establishing a consistent link between them, it has not been clear why.

They achieved this by taking advantage of a simple fact: Your brain is lazy. It makes shortcuts to understand the deluge of information that bombards it daily. If you’re presented with consistent information, consistently, your brain adjust its expectations of reality in turn. This is the basis of Bayesian theories of how we perceive the world – that is, the brain makes inferences about the world around us based on statistics and probabilities on what is likely to occur.

[I]ncreasing dopamine made it more difficult for participants to adjust their perception — an effect comparable to how the hallucinators had struggled. Moreover, the extent to which participants struggled was strongly associated with the severity of hallucinations — but not with any diagnosis of schizophrenia. In other words, the difficulty appeared to be associated with a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Using brain imaging, the researchers also showed that an increased capacity for dopamine release, from a part of the brain known as the striatum (an area involved in schizophrenia), was associated with the severity of hallucinations. Together, these experiments showed that excess dopamine was associated with difficulty in accurately predicting reality.

Rain being wet is discombobulating to say the least.

Bah. Humbug. Walmart is closed and will be swamped at 0700. However, their more expensive cousin down the street, is open from 0800 to 0900 for seniors only.

Or, if I wanted to spend $30+, I could have my groceries delivered to my truck at 1100. But I don’t have that much to spend. *sigh*

The curbside service is at Walmart. Most of the pages I pulled up for things I want (yogurt and Emergen-C) were sold out. Pretty sad.

I put in “toilet tissue” for a search, but all it showed were toilet paper holders! Hmmm. I guess they must be out of the stuff, huh?

I think I know that stuff. Do the petals fall off and stick to the car?

But it IS pretty not over the car.

I left before he could issue a “shelter in place” order. I got a slice of pizza on Tuesday at a place that only had the 3 servers inside. I felt sorry for them so I went in for pizza instead of the sandwich I was going out for.

One server actually forgot he had to give me the pizza to go.

It’s kind of sad to see the city that empty.

I was in line when the local market opened at 6 - in the rain. I snagged 24 rolls of toilet paper. Having thus tripled our supply I hope Mrs. ArGee can relax about that for a while.

I will go to Lin’s (Trader Joe’s wannabe) at 0800 and see if I can find the few things I want. They have taken the water cases from outside the store (fear of theft?) and I have no clue what I will find when I get in there, but at least I’m in the “senior” age group, so I don’t have to fight the younger, stronger minions of heck to get what I want. If they have it.

All this talk of rain, rain, rain. Yeah, having a soft morning here as well...but try looking at it from the Director's point of view....that thunderstorm? This is the real view.

Petals fall off. If it’s over your car, they’ll stick. It’s invasive, too.

I hope it’s restful for you ... especially now that you have extra TP.

It’s warm and a little drizzly here. I went for some ambulation and then finished up some yardwork from yesterday.

I have another envelope to send you with the bookmarks and something else. I hope its not too late in the year for the latter.

Right now, I’m killing time until Lin’s opens. I hope they haven’t jacked up their prices to where I can’t afford the few things I need.

According to the window contractor, they’re still coming tomorrow to replace the upstairs windows, so we need to get ready for that. I guess I’ll start in Shannon’s (formerly Tom’s) room, since it’s vacant of everything but some remaining Bill-and-Tom clutter plus Shannon’s bed and blankets.

I’d be annoyed if I had to wait for Normal People Hours for stores to be open!

How long will Elen, USMC be home?

Is she still bunking with siblings?

I am annoyed. It was annoying when I first moved here until I found Walmart, and now, it’s annoying all over again because even Walmart has to change things. All because the media blew this COVID-19 out of proportion. So much so that my Favorite Daughter, who works in the medical field, is really jacked up about it. She has no real sources for her news, only the LameStreamMedia.

Last I heard from Elen, USMC, she and her friend were going to the coast to hang with her friend’s family. Also, she loved the doily!

I’m glad Elen, USMC loved the doily! It was fun to make it for her!

Even though the sign on the door said “60 and over between 0800 and 0900” there were still people trying to get in who were in their 40’s. GAH!

But even so, miracles happen! <3

I just stuck a pin in my thumb. Ouch! I put some fabric in the wash without realizing it had pins in it.

I’ll have to be careful when I get it out of the dryer.
