There's a good chance you hallucinated this week without ever knowing it

In the 1950s, researchers stumbled upon a new class of drugs that provided relief for those suffering from schizophrenia. These drugs were known as antipsychotics and, as the name suggests, they reduced symptoms like hallucinations and delusions — primarily by reducing the levels of dopamine in the brain. This led clinicians and scientists to argue that dopamine was linked to the experiences of psychotic symptoms, and a concerted research effort ensued, seeking to solve the puzzle of why excess dopamine might produce hallucinations.

Although it was later shown that increasing dopamine could produce hallucinations, establishing a consistent link between them, it has not been clear why.

They achieved this by taking advantage of a simple fact: Your brain is lazy. It makes shortcuts to understand the deluge of information that bombards it daily. If you’re presented with consistent information, consistently, your brain adjust its expectations of reality in turn. This is the basis of Bayesian theories of how we perceive the world – that is, the brain makes inferences about the world around us based on statistics and probabilities on what is likely to occur.

[I]ncreasing dopamine made it more difficult for participants to adjust their perception — an effect comparable to how the hallucinators had struggled. Moreover, the extent to which participants struggled was strongly associated with the severity of hallucinations — but not with any diagnosis of schizophrenia. In other words, the difficulty appeared to be associated with a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Using brain imaging, the researchers also showed that an increased capacity for dopamine release, from a part of the brain known as the striatum (an area involved in schizophrenia), was associated with the severity of hallucinations. Together, these experiments showed that excess dopamine was associated with difficulty in accurately predicting reality.

Wow. I forgot what it was like to be married to someone who had a job only he could do, because not enough people were trained. I’ll keep you in my prayers, anyway. :o]

We’re all doing fine, except maybe Tom. I know he’s alive, because he groaned and rolled over when I took his new calendar into his room - his room for another day or two!

Shannon was sitting on his office chair. She called me a name.

DP and I went to bed around 11:30. Vlad and Tom were still up. Sally and her squeally friend were on the sofas this morning. I don’t care if people are on the sofa, but I start my work day regardless!

James and Pat spent the night with the high school youth group. James went to bed when they got home, but Pat is creeping around. He reports that Jake has sunbeams.

It would take a lot of New Year Bubbly to make Tom groan the morning after! I only have one 2020 calendar — I need two more.

Shannon is getting senile, poor thing.

If Sally and her squeally friend sleep on the sofas, they don’t need to complain when you get up, regardless!! Your house. And all that.

No Sunbeans today. My back told me very early what the barometer is just now displaying, and that is that there is rain on the way. *sigh*

I would like to get my hair cut. I have another coupon from Great Clips for $2.00 off the cost, but I have to use it by the 5th. Tomorrow would be excellent. I’ll check and see if there is anything left to do that. I would hate to think I’d have to cut my own. I’m not very good at that any more!

I am still running off my old brake drum forge. I did get a new handcranked blower for it... Works better than my cobbled together electric blower.

Still running hardwood charcoal instead of bituminous.

I guess we’ll see what tomorrow holds.

*hugs*...

"I guess we’ll see what tomorrow holds."

Tomorrow holds companies that intend to spoil all your fun. I've seen advertisements for machines to print 3-D in the metal of your choice including inconel.

With that kind of tool, you could print your own blower.

Tom the Son is taking his last pickup-load of Tom Stuff over to his new abode. When he gets back, he’ll put his office chair into his new-to-him car, and then he’ll leave forever, or until he needs a place to hang out tomorrow while his car is getting the Check Engine light checked.

Betcha a nickle it's an engine sensor. Make your decision based on "if we had the car for a year and this happened, then ..."; as long as your repair costs are lower than a new car payment, you're coming out ahead.

That seems probably. It seems like there’s always something like that as soon as you get a used car.

Good for Tom the Son, and his Transition to Independence!

The Check Engine light came on in the Tracker about three years ago and My Favorite Son said that any vehicle that has 100,000+ miles on it is bound to have the Check Engine light come on permanently. It doesn’t affect the performance, so not to worry.

Some days, it bothers me, but most days, not.

He passed through sometime after we went to bed, picked up his shampoo, and left some clothes on the dinner table.

“Oh, Morning Floof! What big eyes, you have!”

Good morning. I’ll be taking down the Nativities and putting them away today. I can say that because I slept almost straight through the night...a first in a very, VERY long time.

Did I tell you that my storm glass has had crystals in it since July? They’ve never dissolved. In Henderson, I seldom saw crystals of any kind. Here? HAH! The only change in them is that some days they will be higher and other days, they change forms. It’s interesting to watch. MUCH better than watching paint dry!

On the dinner table? Whoa. Are they to be Washed By Mom to be picked up by Tom at an undisclosed time? Strange!

I’m going to call the place that does the MRI and cancel it because a. I’m not paying $10 for one pill, and 2. One Valium ain’t gonna cut it. Even open-sided MRIs and I don’t mix.

I went to take the trash out and three things were abundantly clear: The porch light is out (again,) the Dumpster is full to overflowing, and there is SNOW on the cars, including mine, with the Frost-Guard cover on the windshield! :o]

"His Boy Scout uniform. I’ll store it in the closet."

Almost as much of a symbolic gesture as riding naked on a wrecking ball.
