The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Good luck. My late mother loved lilacs too. Another clue is the fact you had to stake it. If it was falling over it did not have good root support. It is an older bush too, a real survivor.
I just thought of something else. Make sure when you have your hole ready and slide it out of the pot that you try and spread the roots out to a more natural shape.
“little scamp”
LOL! You’re WAY too kind to those evil critters!
It’s good to know that you’re new to gardening and you found us!
We love Newbies! We can talk your arm off any day of the week on just about any subject.
Been there. Done that. It didn’t work, but I tried it AGAIN, LOL!
Should I add you to our Ping List? :)
A-HA, Indeed! Good FReeping! :)
I'm not sure that Brussels Sprouts and Cucumbers can withstand your summer heat, though. Must need shade and a lot of water? I dunno. I've never had the LUXURY of an 8 month growing season. It would probably KILL me, LOL!
“Im sure Diana or others would have an opinion too.”
I agree. Get that Lilac in the ground, ASAP. Give her a fighting chance!
HOWEVER - I’m not sure all Lilacs CAN grow in CA? They need cold temps and dormancy to flower again the next year. I seem to remember that Lilacs are more of a northern thing? Are you in Northern CA? Then, maybe...
There are some species that CAN live there, but I’m not sure how we can tell which one this is?
Yes, do please add me to your list — blurb2350. In addition to being new to gardening, I’m new to this desert environment in southeastern Arizona. I’m enjoying the whole process, failures as well as successes. Lately I’ve had luck planting shrubs (oleander and Japanese honeysuckle) and small trees (palo verde and chitalpa) in autumn. Turns out fall is an excellent time for planting hereabouts.
Dittos to the dig only the potatoes you need for a week. I’m having a problem logging I to my Fotki account so I can post some photos ( age related memory problems)
Agreed on the potatoes. :) Sad about the memory issues. :(
How did ‘Babysitting for the Old Guys’ go today? ;)
You’re in!
You’ll get your first PING next week when I post a new thread. BUT - feel free to keep chatting/asking questions/learning/goofing off here! :)
Yes, we’re in the Northern part, in the mountains and get snow a few times a year. I have other lilacs that are vigorous and beautiful. It was just this one sad one that I wanted to give special care. It’s a California lilac (I think), my others are Persian lilacs. I think both do well in our area.
I was outside all afternoon digging a huge hole. I won’t transplant until the weather cools off, but the spot is ready, in mostly sunny all day spot. I will spread the roots, for sure. Thanks again!
Good! Then get her in the ground this Fall and watch her thrive. :)
I have a Lilac Hedge that I ‘inherited’ when I moved out here to Beau’s farm.
After a few years of vigorous pruning with a chainsaw (they hadn’t been touched in 30 years!) they are performing like CHAMPS in the Spring. :)
There was only me and 3 other old guys this morning. Two of the others were at the Hammer In in Willow Creek today. That’s a event for wanna-be Blacksmiths...
Another ‘tutorial’ I saw on Griddle Stitch used an even number of stitches for the starting chain - she always ended each row on a single crochet, too. Everyone has their own way of doing it, but the main part is the same. You now have a name you can ‘google’ & check out all the variations! :-)
Looks beautiful. Love that stone foundation too.
I guess I must luck out and have an odd number without counting. The difference it makes is in the edge. Although I always crochet some kind of trim around any blankets. For this baby one I’ll do some kind of scalloped trim and run some ribbon through.
