September 14, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Again, DO NOT use citrus of any kind. They’re adamant about that on all home wine-making sites I’ve looked at.

That's strange. I've seen recipes for various kinds of citrus wines. The only note I remember is that most of them will need more sugar than other wines, and some citrus will need watered down to dilute the acids.

They’re adamant on recipes for this basic, homemade stuff.

BUT - I know you like to experiment, so...have at it and report back. :)

My Step Dad used to make Limoncello. Man, that stuff was GOOD!

Cucumbers and red onions make a pretty pickle jar..... a pickle recipe you can eat-right-away. Takes 15 minutes to make.
ready to go in eight hours, refrigerates up to 5 days. Serve on sandwiches, grilled hamburgers, in chopped salads.

INSTANT SWEET PICKLES
◦⅔ cups white-wine vinegar or apple-cider vinegar ◦⅓ cup sugar ◦⅛ teaspoon Kosher salt ◦2 cups thin-sliced English cucumber,
or any small, slender cucumber ◦1½ cups thin-sliced red onions ◦2 tb torn dill sprigs ◦1 tsp whole peppercorns ◦3 tbl evo.

METHOD mix vinegar, sugar, and salt, stirring occasionally until sugar dissolves. Set aside.
In nonreactive bowl, combine cukes, onions, dill, and peppercorns. Add evo. Stir well. Pour brine over vegetables and toss to combine.

FINAL Cover/frige at least 8 hours before serving. Store refrigerated, for up to 5 days.

Warm and dry here in Central Missouri over the past week.

Mrs. Augie and I made a quick run to Pensacola Beach to attend a wedding over the weekend. More driving than beach, but it was good to see some of the far-flung relations.

My tomato plants are still producing like crazy. I can’t give em away fast enough. It’s almost time to harvest my pear trees. I need to get them picked before the deer do it for me.

Making a run to kansass this weekend to see new baby grand daughter, and pick up the yellow perch fingerlings for my pond.

In 2018 I got a great buy on bags of Vidalia onions, I think I bought 3 five pound bags. I decided to pickle them in a sweeter brine like I use for my banana peppers. Processed many half pints. They are the absolute best on a pulled pork sandwich but boy they are gassy!

Tinypic, the image hosting service that I had used for many years, shut down with very little warning last month. I’ve set up a new account on Photobucket and am starting to figure out how to use it.

I’ll be back to posting pics as soon as I can do it without it feeling like work.

Sounds good, hope that works out for you. I had a free photobucket account for years but got sick of the ads and how long it took to upload. I’ve been using postimages.org for a few years now. Fast and free and no ads. Just in case you are not happy with photobucket.

Hubby loves onions. His homemade hash browns are incredible. Small cubes of potatoes so there is lots of crisp, onions and bacon bits. He also does amazing twice baked potatoes, again, bacon and lots of onions and 2 kinds of cheese. I call them his forklift twice bakers.
