“And Joe McCarthy was actually right most of the time.”
IIRC, after the Soviet Union died in 1991, material from their archives from that period basically vindicated what McCarthy and Richard Nixon and others had said and done regarding Communist witch-hunts. I can also remember that both JFK and his father thought very highly of Senator McCarthy as well.
I think I read somewhere that Senator McCarthy at one time dated Eunice Mary Kennedy - Joe’s remaining non-lobotomized daughter.
But the point is that even if all the popular narrative about "McCarthyism" is true, it lasted a mere five years, from his initial charges in his February 1950 speech until the senate censure vote in December 1954.
I'm not sure we can pinpoint where the era of political correctness started, but it is still running amok.

The broken Soviet cryptographic codes were a national security treasure. Outing spies and moles with 100% accuracy would have tipped our hand.

“In December 1952, at the behest of his father, Kennedy was appointed by family friend Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy as assistant counsel of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations,[64][65] However, Kennedy disapproved of the senator’s aggressive methods of garnering intelligence on suspected communists.[66] This was a highly visible job for him. He resigned in July 1953, but “retained a fondness for McCarthy”.”
