Carrier groups will continue to be a thing as there is a limitation on what you can do with only missles. You can’t land a force without the appropriate protection. And if you can’t take the ground then it just ends up with limited progress and a lot of money spent.
I’ve predicted for a while though that we will start to see drone ships operated from afar. My dream is to have a large drone sub, similar to a ballistic missile sub, that can surface, launch a flight of predator type drones, submerge, then resurface during return operations. All - sub and flying drones operated from a place like Norad.
It’s likely 50 years away though.

Then we’ll start seeing hyper velocity, long range missiles that terminate in long range, hyper velocity torpedo warheads.
Missiles can also be shot down. We do have anti air defenses on ships in our fleets and aircraft carriers don’t sail alone.
