"i’m obviously not lone palm lol... but his name, not lone palm, is pronounced “lay care-ay” and preferably like peter sellers would pronounce it lol. oh, and get this, which i did not know, that’s his nom de plume! his real name is david john moore cornwell."

I sort of summoned LonePalm, but didn't ping him earlier. He is the go-to Francophile and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. Sorry for not pinging you, LP.

I think you nailed the pronunciation, Petey. Thank you.

LonePalm's experiences with the French were far more positive than mine. Though I am a linguist, I am an intransigent French speaker. For me, speaking French is a necessary evil. For LonePalm, it is a joyful thing.

And that is a good thing for him and us.

I'll never be fluent enough in spoken French to not be scoffed.

Also, if you're ever in France and your car gets demolished while Frogs look out their windows, some seem to spend their entire day leaning on the windowsill watching the world go by, don't expect that ANYONE has seen ANYTHING.

If you find yourself dealing with their ersatz military special forces, don't turn your back. They are pantywaists of the Highest Order. Well dressed. Tailored. Cowards.

Ersatz. Cowards.

Ersatz: : being a usually artificial and inferior substitute or imitation

David Cornwell Really? What a dig to have a British author with a nom de plume of a Frenchman.

I beg y'all's pardon for my rant.

yes, i realized Lone Palm was way more french than i will ever be. i do have 3 grandkids who are in french immersion, and one who is in mandarin immersion. the grandchild who speaks mandarin is crazy amazing and only 10! i can count to 10 in french lol. i need to do some language program and try to keep up with them. the mandarin speaking grandson i will never keep up with. he tries to teach me and falls on the floor in laughter. “Nana, that is NOT right!”

i wasn’t aware that for you speaking french was a necessary evil. i do think it a beautiful language. i spent a bit of time in france a million years ago after i graduated from high school and did the let’s tour europe as ignorant americans lol.

if we go back it will be to visit all the ww2 memorials and probably on a tour bus now that i’m older and less adventurous.
