Arizona and Nevada are facing the first-ever mandatory cuts in the amount of water they can take from the Colorado River next year.
The two states are among seven that have agreed to drought contingency plans for the river system that serves about 40 million people and 6,300 square miles of farmland from Wyoming to Southern California.
The cuts are triggered by water levels expected in Lake Mead, a giant reservoir on the river at the Arizona-Nevada border. On Jan. 1, Lake Mead's level is projected to be 1,089.4 feet, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation said late last week. That's just below the drought contingency plan threshold of 1,090 feet, and it means cuts for Arizona and Nevada.

Time to build Pipelines to get Water from where it’s plentiful to where it isn’t.
Uh, I’m really confused. Was I dreaming when this past winter saw the most rainfall in the western states than in a decade? Mammoth Mountain ski resort had so much snow that they didn’t shut down the lifts until July 4th. The Sierra Mountains feed much of the Colorado River.
Lake Powell is at about its avergae for the past 10 years, which is 30 feet below its average since filled.
Lake Mead is the highest its been in the past five years at this date, but that’s almost 80 feet below its average.
The California reservoir system is very, very full for this date after being near capacity IN ITS ENTIRETY during the last rainy season.
Using choo-choo train money in California for desalination of the Pacific Ocean would work, too. Use Israeli technology. They have made it practical.
Time to end the Lost Wages building boom!
In the short term that might give the rest of Nevada a break from LV’s oppressive Libs.
In the longer term it will just send more libs to our other counties to ruin them too.
No way to win here, unless we find a cure for liberalism.
Water usage by millions of illegal aliens in California lead to overdrafting of the Colorado and shorting the Central Arizona Project flows.
Yet another way Mexico - and its vassal state California - are stealing from America.
Or deport about 10 million illegals and be “swimming” in water.
So, they Outlawed benefitting the rest of America and Americans?
Interesting concept, especially with a myriad of Legal Decisions regarding the impact on Interstate Commerce.
I guess the Oil Producing States could do the same thing. After all, Oil is a Natural Resource just like Water is.
Heck, move to the Northeast, plenty of water if you can survive the Marxist polices and exponential tax growth.
Housing crash in Nev and Ariz?
The Sierras do not feed the Colorado River. They feed the Central Valley of California on the long sloping west side. On the short vertical east side they feed the Owens Valley and the Los Angeles Aqueduct but mostly drain into the Great Basin, which has no outlet.
Actually the Sierra Nevadas supply little to the Colorado River drainage. Look at the Kern River draining much of the southern high Sierras. It comes south from the mountains and then west. The Owens Valley to its east still all famously goes to LA.
The Colorado starts North of Rocky Mountain NP and collects most of western Rockies drainage before heading to Lake Powell.
“Forget it, Jake, it’s Chinatown.”
My mistake. Thanks for correcting me.
Arizona was screwed in the water agreement on the Colorado. It gets much of its water from the Salt River Project and the northern areas. Western edge relies on it heavily however. Perhaps our local expert can enlighten us. Hildy, how’s your area doing?
Water is one of the things, that I think our Federal government need to be planning for.
It’s been a long time since major hydroworks have been created.
I wonder if there are fresh water reserves under the ocean floor out west like there are in the northeast.
“Time to build Pipelines to get Water from where its plentiful to where it isnt.”
That cannot happen because doing something like that usually results in freedom.
I was thinking the same thing.
What drought are these moonbats talking about?
I also thought there was record rain this past winter in California and other western states.
