“Trump has set in motion the economic collapse of China. By putting on then taking off, then putting on then taking off tariffs, Trump has made planning impossible for companies, which want to expand or start China operations. This cutoff of investment, not attributable to a legal action by the US leaves the Chinese unable to respond. As it takes hold, their economy weakens.
American companies in particular, now know to realign their suppliers as insurance against disaster, so they can adjust without cataclysmic disruption. Threaten a tariff, then relent so American companies get a little extra time to make their changes. Rinse and repeat. Production moves out of China, and won’t come back.

Meanwhile the Chinese are losing foreign investment, and the leverage over foreign company’s IP secrets. Like most thieves, they have been living above their means, and suddenly have had their income slashed.

Complicating their lives, they must crack down on Hong Kong risking a huge black eye and weakened foreign ties, or let it go on and risk it spending to the Mainland.
