I've opted out of using Google as my search engine for political reasons.
I'm using the Chrome brower and I switched to Bing. If you're using Chrome, it's easy to switch from Google to another search engine.
In the top right corner of your screen you'll see 3 vertical dots. Click the dots and then click "settings".
Scroll down to "Search Engine" and then "Search Engine Used in Address Bar". Towards the right there will be a menu of search engines (Google, Bing etc.) and select the one you prefer. I chose Bing. Exit out of "Settings". The one you selected will become the default search engine.
I did this on my desktop computer and the procedure may vary slightly if you're using a tablet.

You can go into privacy settings and set it up so as not to get any of the annoying pop ups.

Although nothing is bulletproof in the sense of privacy you can take steps to lessen the burden. Might I suggest Duckduckgo as the search engine. By far the better of all of them in respect to privacy.
That’s pretty much my take as well. On a side note, I rarely use a search engine to search news stories. I usually use youtube. Who owns that? ;)

Every search engine with a sufficient volume of information copies Google, so it is no different than using Google. There are some highly specialized search engines for specific vocations or activities, and they won’t give you any generalized information at all. They are very limited in their scope.
Google owns us lock stock and barrel. I will never understand why a GOP billionaire doesn’t start a conservative search engine. It is as if they don’t want us to have one. There are plenty of conservative billionaires out there who could do this, and it would make a killing with all the people who hate Google.
I am constantly stunned by all the things a conservative icon like Rush Limbaugh could be doing to counter the left with action rather than words, but they just seem content to pile up new millions of dollars instead. I don’t begrudge them their financial success — they deserve it and I am happy for them. I am just mad that they could combine to create a conservative search engine, a conservative cable news channel and a conservative newspaper.
That is all I am asking for. 4 LITTLE THINGS. JUST 4.
Conservative Google.
Conservative CNN.
Conservative Facebook.
Conversvative USA Today/NY Times.
That is it. Is that too much to ask from the hundreds of conservative American billionaires out there? Maybe this is something ex-President Trump can do after he finishes his 2nd term. If I was a connected conservative billionaire, I would be pulling out the stops to get these 4 things made, not just sitting on my billions and piling up more while America crashes and burns.
Bings news feed is full of leftist propaganda. Not as bad as Yahoo but pretty bad still.

I use Bing as my search engine. I do use Google Maps.
Google owns youtube. Just about every website in the world has google code plug into it.
Google offers a free service to companies that allows companies to track how there web site preforms called Google Analytics.
Every site I develop has analytics plug into it. I have attempted to get the company I work for not to use Google Analytics, they insist because it is free.
Google also host CDN servers, that have JQuery files for website to link to also. If you block Google Analytics they still get you if the website is link to the CDN server for JQuery.
Even if you do not go to the Google search engine they still know what websites you visit via the CDN. Facebook is also tracking on multiply sites.
Very hard to go dark, but there are ways to do it... Example: Buy a laptop with cash 300 miles from home, install a secure Linux operating system, run VPN etc, and only connect from free wifi spots from a parking lot with no cameras. Never use the laptop for home entertainment, use for business only...

Yes. I understand. This is why I expect google to eventually become highly regulated by the government, just like power companies.
YW- but note- I’ve not used or tested or researched any of these browsers- so i don’t know if they themselves, despite claiming privacy, have any kinds of ‘phone home’ stuff in them- I don’t think they do, but just research first-
Also- note, that if you use something like TOR- you are almost inviting skilled hackers to try to hack into your system because they think you must have important info if you’re trying to hide your browsing activities- Typical basement dwelling hackers likely won’t know how to crack it. but skilled hackers do- there was an article about that awhile back-
it’s all a trade off=- if we’re on the net- we’re vulnerable, despite whatever means we use to try to prevent it- but using things like TOR are like a “Hack This Computer” sign to skilled hackers- so it’s a toss up whether ya wanna use something like that
