Al was up for consideration for a Nobel Prize in 1921, the year before he actually got it, but in 1921 the committee declared that none of the nominees was worthy of the award. A year later, although nothing remarkable had changed in Einstein's work, the committee honored him with the award.
Einstein got the Nobel Prize for his observation of the photo-electric effect. Three others, most notably J.J. Thompson, had previously observed and written about the phenomenon. Einstein's explanation for the effect turns out to have been incorrect.
Regarding Al's Theory of General Relativity, it is largely plagiarized two previous scientists'work, Lorentz (for his "transform") and Henri Poincaré, for his disk model.
Einstein regularly had Charles Proteus Steinmetz check his equations and Steinmetz reported to his friends that Einstein regularly made mistakes that he was left to fix.
Einstein's Nobel was of the same ilk as Obama's--a foray into public relations. Goebbels may have had the Einstein Nobel and the related axiom of "Einstein [being] a genius" in mind when he penned his infamous, “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it."
