Have you ever wondered whether your cat is ignoring you because it doesn't understand its name? Several researchers from Japan did, so they tried to get to the bottom of it.
And we have bad news: According to a study published in Scientific Reports, the researchers found that cats are able to distinguish their names from other random sounds.
Which clearly means that, yes, your cat is just choosing not to respond to your calls to come hang out.

It keeps them employed. Their supervisors don’t care what they study, just as long as they search for grant money and write a few papers every year.

Our six cats definitely know their own names, as well as the names of the other cats.
It’s hilarious when you’re sitting right behind one of them saying her name, and she stares straight ahead. “I can’t HEAR you.”
Must have been a Dodge Cougar. I had a Buick Wildcat and it never listened to me!
Y cats know there names and even occasionally come when called
Cats know their names. They just choose to not tell us what that is. So we make up names they can’t even pronounce.
Although I’ve found that cats respond most readily to “Din-Din”
And that’s proof that there’s always someone at every party who wants to pee in the punch bowl.
Not only do my cats know their names but they know each other’s names. If I’m hanging with one cat and call another then the cat I’m with will stand and look for the other to come.
I know this is not news to cat owners.

All mine I have owned, or should I say owned me was “Who wants to E-A-T.”

Wonder how much tax money went into this research - to learn what every cat “owner” ( servant) has always known anyway.
We once had a cat named Blanco (pronounced the Spanish way, not like Blanco, Texas). We would call him as one would call a dog: “here, Blanco!”—and he would come.
Their next grant is to find out if dogs know their names and the word walk.
Someone here said that cats tolerate us only because they haven’t figured out a way to kill us. Sounds about right.

I’ve found that the sound of jacking a pump shotgun has the exact opposite effect.
There’s at least one cat that can be trained to do more than come to the sound of a can opener...
