I went to high school with a black guy, I wouldn't call him poor, maybe lower middle class. He was one of the smartest people I ever met. He ended up getting a scholarship to MIT.

My final assignment in the Air Force was as commander of an engineering unit. A full third of the engineers and technicians were blacks. The engineers had graduated from reputable engineering schools. The technicians had come from Air Force technician school or from community colleges. They were all good troops and did good work. I was proud of them. It was one of the best assignments of my career.
