Unless you significantly modify an SKS it is not an assault rifle even by the California definition. No pistol grip, no detachable magazine, Magazine limited to 10 rounds or less, no collapsible stock, etc.

How did he get “60 rounds” off with an SKS and not get dropped during the reload?

I have an SKS with an AK 30 rd mag conversion and it is a lousy weapon of choice for mass killing. You can’t just dump the mag, pop in a new one, charge and fire. You kind-a-can, but nothing like an AK or AR and odds of a jam are off the chart.

It was probably the the last thought that went through his mind (right before the cop’s return fire)
