Many moons ago, the way to get a job working in the executive branch of the U.S. government was to do relevant work and demonstrate at least a modicum of understanding about issues the job would entail. (For instance: once upon a time, the Education secretary would have been able to answer basic questions about schools, and the Energy secretary would’ve known that his job wasn’t actually about oil and gas.) Now, the path to employment comes down to being able to answer one or more of the following questions in the affirmative: 1) Are you diametrically opposed to the mission of the agency at which you’ll be employed? 2) Are you willing to be slavishly devoted to Donald Trump? 3) Are you rich? 4) Are you racist? All of which is to say, it’s easy to see why Monica Crowley was hired to serve as Trump’s assistant Treasury secretary for public affairs, and—spoiler alert!—it’s not her deep knowledge of fiscal policy.
