The New Ways Your Boss Is Spying on You
WSJ ^ | 19 July 2019 | Sarah Krouse

It’s not just email. Employers are mining the data their workers generate to figure out what they’re up to, and with whom. There’s almost nothing you can do about it.

... Employers are parsing those interactions to learn who is influential, which teams are most productive and who is a flight risk.

... to examine data on the sender, recipient and timing of over 130 million emails—not the content of the messages—from more than 20,000 U.S. employees to see what dots it could connect about relationships.

It’s not just emails that are being tallied and analyzed. Companies are increasingly sifting through texts, Slack chats and, in some cases, recorded and transcribed phone calls on mobile devices.

“I’m not all tinfoil hat or anything,” she says, noting that she tries to avoid sharing personal data online altogether.

One of the newest frontiers is dissecting phone calls and conference room conversations. In some cases, tonal analysis can help diagnose culture issues on a team, showing who dominates conversations,

Teramind deploys a suite of software that can take a live look at employees’ screens, capture real-time keystrokes, record video of their activities and break down how they spend their time. ...can also classify employees’ hours as productive or unproductive, based on activities like scrolling through Facebook.

Glad you found it worthwhile.
There are peripheral articles to this one with additional insights.

Could you tell us about your workaround?

The other day I was blasted for posting too much, like all 500 words of an exceptional bit of writing.

Are you able to view this one?

No way I could chop it down to 300 words.

A Good Life in My Dying Days
Despite my decaying body, I can still learn, teach and strive to live with dignity.

I’ve got family who encrypt everything.

And the problem is...?

Even a paranoid can have real enemies.

Big Brother is watching you.

Bookmarklets - Get around paywalls, Fancy text for FB, Legal hacking tricks made easy!, Codepen, April 23, 2019, posted by Bon Mots. It has worked really well for me. I'll get a Twitter page with multiple Tweets and usually one links me to the full article. Kudos to Bon Mots for posting this solution back in April.

Here's the direct link: Bookmarklets. Drag the "Paywall Killer" to your bookmark bar. I renamed mine simply "Paywall."

I actually coded a paywall penetration tester so that you can try various methods of getting past a paywall. One of them usually works unless it’s a hard paywall - these tricks are all client side.

https://codepen.io/bookmarklets/pen/MLxoJJ

Drag the ‘Paywall Penetration Tester’ to your bookmarks bar and play with it when you find a paywall.

The company switched to Office 365 and our email goes thru Microsoft servers now. We also use Sharepoint for files.
We also have a company Facebook page.
I have noticed that anything I view is recorded. It will show when someone views a document, not just you.
Example: John Smith last viewed file at 2:09pm
The company Facebook page also tracks viewing,

This is creepy.

$30 refurbished phone. A side benefit of me owning it is that the kids can’t complain when my phone is as dumb as theirs.

And any time one of them loses it, it is an annoyance, not a freak out.

Judas Priest said it a whole lot better:

Electric Eye
Judas Priest

Up here in space
I’m looking down on you
My lasers trace
Everything you do

You think you’ve private lives
Think nothing of the kind
There is no true escape
I’m watching all the time

I’m made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean

I’m elected electric spy
I’m protected electric eye

Always in focus
You can’t feel my stare
I zoom into you
You don’t know I’m there

I take a pride in probing all your secret moves
My tear less retina takes pictures that can prove

I’m made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean

I’m elected electric spy
I’m protected electric eye

Electric eye, in the sky
Feel my stare, always there
There’s nothing you can do about it
Develop and expose
I feed upon your every thought
And so my power grows

I’m made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean

I’m elected electric spy
I’m protected electric eye

Protected, detective, electric eye

we need, is a Federal law preventing employers from looking at an employee’s or prospective employee’s social media

I totally disagree.

When you hire someone, you are buying the total package.
And you are libel for anything they do on your time and more.

We had a government contract, and they wanted EVERYONES driving records.
Not just the employees involved with the account, that was interesting. We had two refuse to sign a release. I knew both of them well, both Viet vets and one was a heavy drinker, former PUFF the Dragon pilot, the other drank but not all that much. Both excellent employees.

Most new hires can stand on their head for about two weeks, looking good. Then revert to form.

If you were a restauranteur, would you hire someone that chatted up spitting in food? Just an accusation could put you out of business, with an employee like that.

Due diligence now or pay later.

I’m watched and recorded every second I’m at work, and what’s worse, my supervisors sit there and watch and listen and then report you for any violations.

But hey, if I want to murder my baby, I have a right to privacy!

I told them when they bought and paid for a new cell phone and the monthly bill, they could have the number.

At work, everything was required to be “intrinsically safe”. So the company cell phone mostly stayed on my desk.
They had high pressure 1000psi hydrogen and other fun things. Remember the Hindenburg!

I found an approved case for my personal phone and they would sometimes text me just for fun.
So I whined about the cost of the texts.

One morning going to our usual table in the cafeteria, a basket of coins and a sign. PLEASE HELP GRUNT WITH HIS TEXT BILL.
I made the rounds shaking the basket.

Put the coins in my pocket, said thanks and sat down.

When first upgraded to phons with GPS, I told everyone, they are tracking you! Many would turn the phone off when at lunch or after work. Oh, I had fun with that !!!

They were tracking you long before that. You can still get an approximate location based on tower connection. No GPS required.

Boss Spying goes two ways.

Cowardly Human Resources who hate America and enforce conformity to nonsense, should be shamed.

Cowardly Human Resources are failures to competition necessary to survive.

Throw it back in their ignorant face. Surrender monkeys don’t win.

Shame them. It is necessary to win.

A paralegal told me of a woman who came in wearing a neck brace & crutches and complaining she could barely move without excruciating pain. She had been injured at work 6 weeks earlier.

While they were interviewing her, they pulled up her Facebook account. It included her just completed trip to Hawaii. And surfing videos.

They declined to take her case.

I’m watched and recorded every second I’m at work,

Wow!

We had electronic access tags, that tracked every door entry and the main gate.

Because it was a research lab with some possible dangers, the claim was made to know the whereabouts of everyone inside the building in case of a disaster.
Occasionally they would produce a printout as a warning to a very few thinking they can sneak a long lunch.

IMO it is unlikely to increase production unless they are overwhelmed with slugs.

The old line is, if you do not like how fast I’m moving now, you will really hate my next speed.

Anyone with a brain could have brought our work to a halt with safety and PC BS. They would also know it was the end of their employment.

They are out there!

One time, and only one time, I filled out a form the company had that said NOT RECOMENDED FOR REHIRE.

After a guy came in apparently drunk, personal requests he takes a breathalyzer test and he was gone.

Year or two later I receive a call that this guy was rehired and working in a different building!

Before 9 AM on day one he claimed he slipped and hurt his back!!
They said somehow the not rehire form was overlooked?

My phone GPS is way better than the built-in one in the car...even places that opened a few days ago show up, while the built-in GPS only has updates available every 6-12 months and that is for data that is 6-12 months old...
I only turn off the GPS feature of my phone when I intend to do something bad - and then my car rats me out.
