The New Ways Your Boss Is Spying on You

It’s not just email. Employers are mining the data their workers generate to figure out what they’re up to, and with whom. There’s almost nothing you can do about it.

... Employers are parsing those interactions to learn who is influential, which teams are most productive and who is a flight risk.

... to examine data on the sender, recipient and timing of over 130 million emails—not the content of the messages—from more than 20,000 U.S. employees to see what dots it could connect about relationships.

It’s not just emails that are being tallied and analyzed. Companies are increasingly sifting through texts, Slack chats and, in some cases, recorded and transcribed phone calls on mobile devices.

“I’m not all tinfoil hat or anything,” she says, noting that she tries to avoid sharing personal data online altogether.

One of the newest frontiers is dissecting phone calls and conference room conversations. In some cases, tonal analysis can help diagnose culture issues on a team, showing who dominates conversations,

Teramind deploys a suite of software that can take a live look at employees’ screens, capture real-time keystrokes, record video of their activities and break down how they spend their time. ...can also classify employees’ hours as productive or unproductive, based on activities like scrolling through Facebook.

Bad news G Larry, he’s monitoring every move you make...

and...

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
He'll be watching you

I got a new flip phone and it has GPS. You can’t buy a new phone without it.

I had people suddenly befriending me in coffee shops who were interested in getting their book published. I had “publishing” on my Facebook page. It happened like four times before I figured it out.

Nothing is secret anymore anyway.

I have never bought a Cellphone without a removable battery.

When they went with the GPS phones, one guy demonstrated how quickly he could remove the battery.

The best part is, the owner told me it was not worth cost and effort to use the tracking function.

I think it is much cheaper and simpler today.

One very important thing we need, is a Federal law preventing employers from looking at an employee’s or prospective employee’s social media, and also preventing employers from taking any disciplinary action against an employee based on any social media post or video. This is absolutely necessary in 2019!

"One good example I have seen (and read about) is the way they treat “dead wood”. That is the employee that has been there the longest and has seen all the changes and more importantly can remember how to “fix” the old stuff. I call this dead wood the CORPORATE MEMORY. With out it a company often has to re-invent the wheel since no one remembers how to keep the old one working."

Hey, I resembled that remark. Though I failed miserably as a manager and implementer of change, there is value in knowing legacy systems and having knowledge of where the skeletons are buried.

I taught my guys how to use Faraday cages under the single stipulation that they not divulge where they got the idea...

Just carry a roll of Reynolds aluminum foil for a handy Faraday pouch to place your cell phone in to block the signals!

A couple of decades ago my wife gave me Flip Phone and a start up with a provider.

Only she, our adult children and my mother had the number.

My company and boss found out and wanted the number. I told them when they bought and paid for a new cell phone and the monthly bill, they could have the number. They never did.

A couple of years later, I got an early retirement with a good package. Part of the package was a new free cell phone and free on line service with a new phone every 2 years.

I gave the phone unopened back to my soon to be former boss and said no thank you. Then, they mailed the phone to my home, and I UPSed it back using the company prepaid UPS number.

Then, other retired reps found out why they got a “free” phone, they got calls at all hours from their replacements wanting help. Within a year most retired reps sent their “free” phones back.

If it has a capacitor, it has a permanently-connected “battery”. The larger it is, the more it can do when your phone is “powered off”.

I use my phone GPS many times each day.

A case could be made that they are creating a “hostile” work environment

IMO most, not all, want to stay busy as long as they understand the work and have everything needed to do it.

Before and even after the electronic access badges, I occasionally need a ring of security keys, But I wore it all day all the time. They said I could be heard a block away.

I do not need to find a flock of them discussing last nights game, the sound of keys did the trick.
Everyone knows who the slugs are.

When I was a trainee my mentor said, sometimes you get a fun guy, maybe not the best worker. Keep them to ‘break it up’ once in a while. And that worked well for me.

My right-hand man and a good friend enjoyed telling the newbies, how I was a deranged Viet vet, and he ran to Canada to be a fishing guide! And he wore an earring!
He actually had been a school teacher and an avid fisherman, the diamond was from his x’s wedding ring.
I’d tell them he was a recovering hippy and queer!

And we had fun until about the last five years when PC started to take over.

I’m laughing just recalling some of the crap we did.

A young technician once inquired about the earring, my bud gave him a big smile and a wink!
I gave him a nudge and said queer.

He refused to return alone to our building!!!

If it has a screen, you can run the capacitors down quickly.

I don't need to use it every day, but it sure comes in handy when I travel to an area I am not familiar with. On a separate note, I was flying earlier this year and ran into some difficulties. My airline app had my new connecting flight ready to. There was no need to stand for a half hour in the customer service line to figure out what was going on.
