In the summer of 1969, U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy found himself in the worst scandal of his scandal-scarred life. He had plunged his mothers 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 into the black waters off Chappaquiddick Island and then swam to safety, leaving Mary Jo Kopechne to suffocate in the submerged vehicle.
In this special podcast, written by New York Times best-selling author Howie Carr, youll learn how Ted Kennedy clamored to absolve himself of nearly all responsibility for the death of a young woman before a national television audience, and managed to face few legal repercussions in the wake of Mary Jos gruesome death at the age of 28.

Wonderful essay there on James Michael Curley who I never read anything about. Can’t vouch for the statistical analysis (Greek to me), but the textual analysis is very good.
Thanks, Lonesome.

Such an interesting, informative history lesson in such a short article...and to the point that in order to comment any further, the reader has to read the history of this State and the people who control it: The Kennedys...
Thank you poconopundit for a fabulous article...
That should have been, when we woke up to the fact that we had two Americas.
Ours, where laws were obeyed, and their America, the real deep state, where our federal and state laws didn’t apply to the elite coastal lefties and their spoiled spawn.
The elite could kill others, use drugs and have sex with minors and not have to worry about it. They could do what they wanted to, and no laws then and now applied to them.
The Clintoons, the Kennedy’s and the elites in Follywood, DC, Miami, New York, LA, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and ???? controlled the laws of the cities, the states and federal courts, judges and police in those cities.
Our DOJ/FBI and the federal judges were their protectors against the rest of America.
They could do anything as a Kennedy, Clinton, Epstein and as a Follywood star and get by with it. If we broke one of the thousands of IRS and other stupid liberal laws, we ended up broke and in jail or worse.
On arriving at the party house, Kennedy told his cousin Joe Gargan exactly what happened. Joe went back to the Dyke Bridge with Ted, but they could not find any trace of Mary Joe. (It late at night and dark.)
Ted wanted Joe to frame an alibi, but he refused. He wanted Joe to say that Mary Jo had taken the car and driven off by herself. Joe refused to cooperate. He wanted to call the police immediately. Ted said he would call the police when he got back to his hotel in Eagartown, which was a across a small channel from Chappaquiddick. Joe reluctantly agreed and drove Ted to the Ferry slip where it was a short swim back to Eagartown.
I was walking down the path from JFK’s grave and noticed Ted’s grave plaque next to the path. I was struck by how inconspicuous it was for someone who had been the “lion” of the senate.
PING! Another great read. It ties the Curley legacy to Obama’s destructive force in killing big cities.
This needs to be widely read. Thanks, Lonesome.
Occam’s razor explanation Mary Jo was pregnant and - eh watch the movie and you’ll see what is the simplest explanation -
Once the press figured out how to get away with lying and manipulating public opinion they have only grown more bold in their lies and corruption, they are the worst abusers of 1st amendment rights.
That may have been one of the best ad slogans ever written.
meant to include you in post #30.
Correct, Mary Jo was most likely pregnant yet NO autopsy or was there? Also Mary Jo was likely not drinking any alcohol due to her condition yet she wanted to leave the party, felt sick or was later passed out likely from someone spiking her drink, someone who was a married public figure that had everything to lose...
hmmmm who could it be?
Sa-a-
I don’t think this was a genuine VW ad, although it follows the theme of the time. (~Doyle, Dane, Birnbach advertising agency).
I have news for you...it wasn't just "the people of Mass" who fell for it.
Massoftwoshits? Barny Frank comes to mind...
“Senatorial Privilege” is a great book, one that I have read multiple times.
I think speculation Kennedy wasn’t in the car is groundless. If he wasn’t, he would have most certainly found a way to weasel out of it somehow. He tried to weasel out of it even though he was IN the car.
But he couldn’t. He had to admit he was in the car, and driving.
I saw you are from Washington state. I imagine it is good for a state like Washington that there is a state like Massachusetts. It is like Jimmy Carter being happy for the existence of a worse President like Barack Obama.
I would imagine it is good not to be in last place for the title of most leftist state even with scum like Jay Inslee and Patty Murray running the show.
Jay Inslee is a real winner.
And the quip, "Ted, what if I'm pregnant?" "We'll drive off that bridge when we get to it."
The fact that Mary Jo was never autopsied naturally raises suspicions, but I doubt she was pregnant. Drowning deaths of tourists on Martha's Vineyard are not at all uncommon, and the undertaker who had experience with similar cases was surprised the medical examiner released her body to leave the state without one. The undertaker did note that there was very little water in her lungs (she probably didn't drown) and he took a blood sample, which later showed that she was slightly intoxicated.
