It’s because asserting that you have the ability to “define” yourself, regardless of your created nature, is the ultimate rejection of God and the whole concept of created nature. This theory also nullifies the rights pertaining to you as a human being, that is, the natural rights of man, and you become entirely a “unit” at the disposal of the state. In addition, having the state force everyone else to accept this complete denial of visible, physical reality gives the state huge power.
So its importance is philosophical or metaphysical. Once we have divorced ourselves from physical reality and are forced to say that black is white, we are totally the property of the state, which steps into the place formerly held by God.
