Well, cows 'generate' a lot of gas, so, why not put a cow or two on a car's roof, or provide a trailer behind the vehicle to carry around your own fuel?
Alternately, how 'bout going back to the horse-drawn carriage? Or the coal-fired engine like locomotives used to have?

Better to uses horses or oxen.
Get the fuel and the horsepower!
(And maybe a way to switch from oxen in city driving to horses on the highway.)
