I agree. I think maybe some military planes, which are the usual escorts, do the escorting. Why would they send AF1 along?

AF1 is a designator, not a plane. Its whatever Air Force plane the President is on, just like Marine 1 designates if he is aboard a Marine aircraft or Navy 1 if its a naval aircraft.
