White blood cells called T-cells are removed from the patient’s blood before being frozen in liquid nitrogen and sent away to labs in the USA.
There, they’re genetically reprogrammed so that rather than killing bacteria and viruses, they now seek out and kill cancer.
Then they’re shipped back to the UK to be infused into the patient’s bloodstream where they’ll hopefully continue to grow and work inside the patient.
...
Why are the cells shipped to the USA? Isn’t their socialized medicine superior?
Wow. Biden has started already.
Great news... if it works. I have a t-cell blood cancer. The current treatment is to recycle your entire bloodstream into a machine exposing it to ultra violet light and returning it. Not too effective.
[[so that rather than killing bacteria and viruses,]]
Ummmm- Hopefully there’s enough unmodified white blood cells left in the body to combat bacteria and viruses while the modified ones do their cancer killing jobs?
Hope for at least 40% but not here even though this is the home of the technology necessary for the procedure.
Why does this have to be announced from the UK? Why isn’t it here now? Not enough money in it? Can’t patent it because it is public technology? Can’t exploit it by marketing like those fruity tejeho (sp?) commercials?
American medicine is NOT the best in the world if you can’t get it and can’t afford it. On the basis of life expectancy to dollars spent alone it is an UNMITIGATED DISASTER!
Bump
Kite Pharma (USA) has an approved T-Cell therapy. I believe it is 100k per treatment. It has had some success obviously to have been approved but there can be very severe side effects inc. death.
Marker Therapeutics (USA) is developing a T-cell therapy for lymphoma and other Cancers both blood and solid. They will be releasing data on there therapy for pancreatic cancer next month. There process is different than Kites. Early results are superior for Blood cancers, very little side effects and at least on paper about 1/10th the cost of Kites therapy. Hopefully it can be fast tracked.
