New ‘living cancer drug completely cures lymphomas’ – putting terminal patients into remission

What is CAR-T?

It's a highly personalised drug that's made for each patient using their body's own cells.

White blood cells called T-cells are removed from the patient's blood before being frozen in liquid nitrogen and sent away to labs in the USA.

There, they're genetically reprogrammed so that rather than killing bacteria and viruses, they now seek out and kill cancer.

Then they're shipped back to the UK to be infused into the patient's bloodstream where they'll hopefully continue to grow and work inside the patient.

The whole process takes a month.

Because it's very new, there's not enough data to say for sure how effective the new therapy is but clinical trials have shown incredible results.

40 per cent of patients had all signs of their terminal lymphomas removed from their body just 15 months after treatment.

CAR-T cells target proteins that stick out from the surface of cancerous cells.

Cancerous cells have a kind of protein attached to them - but so do healthy cells.

So CAR-T therapy currently targets these proteins, whether they're healthy or not.

That's OK if it's a blood cancer you're dealing with but if you've got lung cancer, for example, you can't kill off bits of the lung without killing/seriously impacting the health of the patient.

Why are the cells shipped to the USA? Isn’t their socialized medicine superior?

I don’t care what they do. This is wonderful news. Always a negative naysayer in the group.

For those interested in the history and hope for cancer immunotherapy they should read the excellent new book, “The Breakthrough: Immunotherapy and the Race to Cure Cancer”, by Charles Graber. Cancer is very adaptive and mutations that survive any treatment can hide out for years before reactivation so the word “cure” is not used. The best outcome is extending the years of remission as long as possible.

The American capitalist cure is wonderful news.

Other than that you are making a baseless accusation.

Great news... if it works. I have a t-cell blood cancer. The current treatment is to recycle your entire bloodstream into a machine exposing it to ultra violet light and returning it. Not too effective.

[[so that rather than killing bacteria and viruses,]]

Ummmm- Hopefully there’s enough unmodified white blood cells left in the body to combat bacteria and viruses while the modified ones do their cancer killing jobs?

Hope for at least 40% but not here even though this is the home of the technology necessary for the procedure.

Why does this have to be announced from the UK? Why isn’t it here now? Not enough money in it? Can’t patent it because it is public technology? Can’t exploit it by marketing like those fruity tejeho (sp?) commercials?

American medicine is NOT the best in the world if you can’t get it and can’t afford it. On the basis of life expectancy to dollars spent alone it is an UNMITIGATED DISASTER!

You are the only one to bring negative remarks into it. At least I got you to say capitalism is good. That’s a start.

T-cells are only one type of white blood cells. There are also B-cells, and one other type, I think (I am a musician, not a physician although some people are both. I only learned this stuff in the last couple years as my lymphoproliferative disorder became lymphoma). CAR-T does not treat every type of lymphoma. My doc used straight up rituxan to treat mine. This article was positive, but the treatment is not for every lymphoma.

After my treatment, my bloodwork showed my lymphs to be 1. I avoided all sick people.

According to a law signed by Ronald Reagan in 1986 or thereabouts, all public hospitals are required to treat sick people regardless of their ability to pay. I was assured last year as my treatments soared over $12,000 EACH that payment was not a consideration.

FWIW, I do have insurance and have worked out a payment plan for the rest. But that was not known when I checked into the hospital almost at death’s door.

Kite Pharma (USA) has an approved T-Cell therapy. I believe it is 100k per treatment. It has had some success obviously to have been approved but there can be very severe side effects inc. death.

Marker Therapeutics (USA) is developing a T-cell therapy for lymphoma and other Cancers both blood and solid. They will be releasing data on there therapy for pancreatic cancer next month. There process is different than Kites. Early results are superior for Blood cancers, very little side effects and at least on paper about 1/10th the cost of Kites therapy. Hopefully it can be fast tracked.
