I too recall that joke from around 1970 or 71. This version is more elaborate but I can still recall the telling and the hearing of it (much briefer) from back in those days.

It’s great that somebody posted it, but that last line attempting to explain it is completely ruinous. That was absolutely unnecessary. Thanks for that link.
