Thanks for posting. Found this fascinating.

Watched Outlander series—thot the stones were fictional, but now I am guessing they were based on some of the locations on Orkney Island.

Have wanted to visit Scotland Highlands, now may add Orkney Island to list.

I have a trip booked for September. Have always wanted to go to Scotland and finally bit the bullet. 3 cities and all around and in between. Edinburgh, Inverness, and Glasgow.

The Orkneys appear to have been inhabited and then abandoned a number of times over many thousands of years. When the Vikings arrived, there were people on the islands (the Shetlands, the Orkneys), but the inhabitants appear to have been few, and were wiped out. Even the Pictish placenames, whatever they were, got overwritten by the invaders.
