I don't think that enough attention is being paid on any of the sites Ive visited to the underlying technology thread woven throughout the story we have been told so far.
I started somewhere similar to here (Facebook AI Creates Its Own Language In Creepy Preview Of Our Potential Future) and wound up somewhere else that answered a number of other questions that have been nagging me. Maybe youll arrive there too. (No, its not "that". Dig weirder.)

If they were planning a war or plague or some other event to cause a big drop in population, they would have to ensure that they had enough people left to “do things”. So maybe they are working on that.
Did you think that derps would clean their own houses, mow their own lawns, cook their own meals? And who is going to build and maintain their cars, planes, boats? Or remove their trash? Or cut their hair or do their surgery and dental work? Or their plumbing and electrical work? Or grow their food? Or ship it to them?
There would be very little science or engineering and close to zero innovation in an all-derp world. Remember: These people are stupid. And lazy. Can you imagine what it would be like if you had to depend on someone like HRC or Kerry or 0vomit to fix your car? Or sew on a button? I wonder if any of those three could even operate a can opener.
For some reason, the phrase “useless eater” comes to mind.
