Then lets look at the most common reasons for both parents working. Cost of living. Id say 98% of the women Ive come across would prefer to stay home. But, it is/was financially impossible. Perhaps they could downgrade their home, move to a less expensive area (which may include less optimal school systems and neighborhoods ). Perhaps they could forfeit their vacations, kids sports, field trips, and other extra Expenses. But, its their choice. Like I said, they would prefer to stay home, but it costs $$ to have a family and most of the time that requires 2 incomes.
We all know from our economics courses that an increase in supply of Labor puts downward pressure on wages.
Could it be said that having women in the workforce, by increasing the supply of labor, in part, created the conditions that required two salaries, because of the impact on wages?
