The Queen today paid tribute to 'my generation' as she saluted the heroism of D-Day veterans at a 75th anniversary event attended by Donald Trump and world leaders including Theresa May, Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel and Justin Trudeau.
In a moving ceremony in Portsmouth 300 heroes who survived the invasion of France in 1944 were guests of honour and a group stood and saluted the thousands who made the ultimate sacrifice fighting Hitler's Germany on Normandy's beaches.
Mr Trump, who was accompanied by First Lady Melania, sat next to the Queen and Prince Charles and they smiled and chatted surrounded by the leaders of all the Allied nations who took part in Operation Overlord - the codename for D-Day.
The President read excerpts of a prayer, broadcast across the United States by his predecessor Franklin D. Roosevelt on the night of the D-Day invasion, before French President Macron rose to thank those who fought to liberate his country from Hitler's grip.
Mr Trump said: 'Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavour, a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion, and our civilisation, and to set free a suffering humanity.'
And the Queen paid tribute to the 'resilient wartime generation' - she called 'my generation' - and said: 'Seventy-five years ago, hundreds of thousands of young soldiers, sailors and airmen left these shores in the cause of freedom.
'Many of them would never return, and the heroism, courage and sacrifice of those who lost their lives will never be forgotten. It is with humility and pleasure, on behalf of the entire country - indeed the whole free world - that I say to you all, thank you.'

I was in London on the 50th anniversary. I remember that the Clintons went to Moscow to celebrate it. The media was crickets.

Trump is the man for the time....no doubt. Class surrounded everywhere by class less people.
The left in this country, the media should be ashamed.
I know that 99% here were not happy about Obama the first 4 years...even the last four for sure...but we respected the office.
I counted the days Clinton was in office, but we respected the office.

I was going to make a nasty comment about Merkel attending, but perhaps she needs to see this memorial more than most.
In many ways, I think she is as arrogant as Hitler was, and perhaps she could use a little slice of humble-pie.
I have noticed the complete absence of Prince Phillip (age 97 on 06/11/19) from all of this celebration. As a serving officer in the Royal Navy during WW2, it is almost certain that both age and his official retirement from ‘Royal Duties’ as of 08/02/17, that has kept him from being front & center.

My grandfather's memoirs talk about how surprised he was to arrive in London in '44 and find it completely blacked out. He had a number of close calls with Buzz Bombs both in England, and on the Continent (he called them the "Antwerp Express" and "Leige Local", depending on how high they were). Worth remembering that England was a war zone, where anything could happen, from 39-45.
Friend of the family was a child during the Blitz, and along with many others, was sent to "safety" in the countryside in Wales. Came home years later with a thick Welsh brogue, much to his parents' consternation. :-)
Queen Elizabeth appears to have her wits about her far more than the presumptive heir to the throne, her son Charles. He just looks dotty and rumpled, completely out of it. Camilla Parker-Bowles is not as terrible as people have made her out to be, she’s actually a sort of attractive older woman.
May looks ill, always has. Pale, wan, dark circles, just very weak.
Slovenia’s DMP, Rai, sure looks high born, a striking man.
Melania stole the show again, but what else is new.
