San Francisco to force treatment on mentally ill drug users

San Francisco officials decided Tuesday to force some people with serious mental illness and drug addiction into treatment, even if it goes against the spirit of a city known for its fierce protection of civil rights.

Several members of the Board of Supervisors voiced deep concerns Tuesday about the possibility of taking away a person’s civil liberties, but the proposal for a pilot program passed 10-1.

Mayor London Breed and other supporters say the move — known as conservatorship — is necessary to help people who are often homeless, addicted to drugs and have a mental illness, making them a danger to themselves.

“Allowing people to continue to suffer on our streets is not acceptable or humane, and I am glad the Board of Supervisors supported our approach to finally make a change,” Breed said in a statement after the vote.

The measure would apply to a handful of people, the city’s department of public health estimated, although the number would grow under legislation pending at the state level. …

It gets to the point where there is no humane solutions. The humane ones cost too much or postpone an even worse situation.

Best partial solution is controlling our illegal immigration.

Video from practical implementation of such a program could create unlimited ads for Trump in the 2020 election.

“Translation: We have to exert control over homeless because our tax base is moving out of the city, our tourism is suffering and we are tired of stepping in crap.”

Bingo! The same people that stopped the institutionalizing of mentally ill people in the 70s because it violated their rights. Can’t wait to see how this plays out.

Read that sentence again, FRiend. Do you honestly think they are going to limit this to only the "homeless"? Remember what is being done to the second amendment rights of seniors on Soc Sec who have others take care of their affairs. The gov't checks off the "mental illness" box with that one. Need to take heart, diabetes, etc. medication daily? That takes care of "addiction." This is the nose of a very BIG camel peeking under the tent.

I understand that there is a humongous problem with addiction and mental illness, but do you really trust left wing (or any) POLITICIAN to make the call?

Not quite. Back when the pendulum was where it needed to be (so to speak), the politicians had nowhere near the power they have seized today.

They sure did in institutionalizing folks. They caught up all who needed it — and more.

That’s why, along with the improving drugs and the rising costs, they dumped too many of them out onto the streets.

Just another democrat run liberal city that gave the homeless and drug addicts every “right” they could think of, and then are surprised when they are overrun by homeless and drug addicts, and their city is becoming an embarrassment. Leftist answer to the problem: dig a deeper hole.

I think we have to do something and find a way to strike a balance between civil rights and just plain protecting folks from dangerously crazy people. Protection of folks civil rights, it can be argued, can be a cloak for for liberals and conservatives being indifferent to the needs of crazy, dangerous folks who just cannot do for themselves.

The word “surprised” ought to be in scare quotes too; the politicians know exactly what the result will be so they can impose their solution.

If needle exchange was supposed to prevent costly outbreak of diseases, how is it that San Francisco, and other cities in California are experiencing all these disease outbreaks?

You don't think exchanging needles only encourages people to do more drugs? And the opposite problem that probably occurs is that drug users are too lazy to go exchange needles, especially the homeless ones.

And then there's this...From April 23, 2019:

San Fransisco Streets Flooded with Dirty Used Needles

Yeah, that needle exchange program is working real good.

There are countless reasons for disease outbreaks but CLEAN needles are not one of them

Very good point!! I don’t trust any politician about anything. That’s like asking Bill Cosby to mix you a drink.

"There are countless reasons for disease outbreaks but CLEAN needles are not one of them"

But as you can see in the article I posted about the thousands of needles being dropped on the streets of Los Angeles by drug users, those once clean needles are now harbingers of disease for others.

Additional needles on the street can never be a result of properly operated needle *exchanges*. It was a result of poor policy and training of workers which is now being addressed.

They have already been proven to greatly reduce new disease rates in addicts by something like 70% in 5 years. This will greatly reduce disease and medical costs to taxpayers
