It also helps if you have a curious mind and are a voracious consumer of books/tv/film. That way you have a large base of exposure for facts your brian can retain.
Our school valedictorian was a friend of mine. Very intelligent mind for figures, and very smart, obviously. Was TERRIBLE at trivia. No matter how much he studied such things, he’d never be good at it.

You might be surprised. Like I said, the game moves so quickly there’s no time to think about the fact that you’re on TV. It really doens’t even FEEL like you’re on TV. And not just because it’s taped and not live. The set and the studio audience are smaller than they look from home. I almost felt like I was in a smaller space like in my house where I obviously would have felt relaxed.
Considering she had four prior interviews that never got her on the show (which include game playing), I would hardly consider her one of the best contestants ever..she got lucky.
In fact, I'll even go out on a limb to say she will be lucky to win 3 more appearances.
For the record, it was Nancy Zerg who beat Ken Jennings and she promptly lost in the next game.........
They had a couples game and a guy I know was on it. While he and his wife didn't win, they did walk away with $15K........
I’m one of the most brilliant people I know and when I took the online Jeopardy test quiz I couldn’t answer a single question......I think they saw me coming and rigged the questions.
We watched it last year and some really weird savanty or aspergerery guy was on. He guessed every puzzle with 2-5 letters showing, every one.
You may be brilliant or not, but you really have to train for these tests. Those facts need to be bubbled up near the top.
James read children’s books to prep. They hit all the high spots with interesting fun facts that didn’t loose his attention.
I DID study, focusing on categories which show up frequently, but I would say it really only helped me with about two questions over two full games. But those one or two questions could still be the margin between victory and defeat, so I’d still say it was worth it. But you can play well and win without studying at all, frankly.
He did play well but his recall was amazing. He also set another record of 44 correct answers in a row.
That's me. I have loved reading since I was old enough to hold a book. And, I've always loved movies.. and, I travel all over the world, for work. So, I get a lot of "free" geography and cultural lessons.
Maybe I should give it a try. Sometimes, I am able to really "get in a zone" and ignore Alex completely. On those days, my wife gets pretty annoyed with me. ;-)
Hmnn.. didn't know about her priors. She must have gotten some GREAT categories.. cause, she didn't miss a question.
That said, her DD questions were both easy. I mean, "Annapolis"? Duh. And, "Deep State"? I've read that book. Those two were the difference.
But, she did pretty darn well yesterday.
It actually took me 3 years to get on (before the internet was big, of course).
I passed all the tests, but once you do you’re just in the contestant pool for the year, and some people don’t get a phone call and have to try out again for the following year’s pool.
The third time, the woman in charge recognized me and said “Weren’t you here last year?” I said. “Yeah, my third time actually.” I think that’s when I got the check mark and they’d figured I’d waited long enough. lol
The writers of Jeopardy are very liberal. For one thing, they consistently and often present anthropomorphic climate change as indisputable. I stopped watching when they kept having Nancy Pelosi reading clues (yes, they also have liberal Republicans sometimes reading clues). I tuned back in because Alex has been a good host for many shows during my lifetime and it may be nearing the end.
I would agree with everything in your post, but I don’t buy that the producers rigged it against him. I don’t believe they are moving Daily Doubles around, and I don’t think they could predict who would be strong enough to beat him. There have been contestants in the past who were good and came within striking distance. And then there were contestants who might have been good but were too slow or made mistakes. The key was to not let him seize control and start running away with it. They did that yesterday.

Contestants win and contestants lose......to think otherwise and assume a conspiracy is just plain stupid.......

What does being a female have to do with it? I’ve never said anything to that affect. I just said she was a very good player.
She’s doing pretty well tonight too.
The DD’s were DEFINITELY the difference... whether or not there was a conspiracy. Getting them was what helped James win. Not getting them was what defeated him.
