Jay Lenos Garage

1931 Duesenberg Model J Town Car
When Jay found the last original-owner, unrestored Duesenberg in the world languishing in a Manhattan parking garage, he knew he had to call in an expert.
Thanks to Randy Ema, this Woods-bodied car owned by the Strauss family is finally back on the road.

I love that show, and I have a soft spot for the Deusey. My husband and I started watching when he was still using YouTube as his primary platform, and we still watch whenever we see it on.
His garage is my dream garage. Hell, I wouldn’t even have a house. Just the garage with a tiny attached kitchen and a bathroom. And another garage for gun storage.
This restoration must’ve cost a doozie
Jay Leno is the classiest guy on TV.
That he’s a gearhead is just icing on the cake.
His collection is incredible, and his weekly videos are a blast to watch.
Fantastic presentation. Thanks.
I love the Duesenbergs. Those vehicles are the epitome of 1930s luxury and a glided age.
As much a work of art as it is a car. Man I miss the days when cars were built for style comfort and performance. Now its how do we make a car thats in compliance with Government mandates that people will still be willing to buy or lease?
I’m pretty easily pleased. I’d settle for just his bike collection.
That’s a real doozy!
Duesenberg. The name alone sounds great. Like Studebaker. That was another great sounding car manufacturer name.
“As much a work of art as it is a car.” They still build such cars and they are light years ahead of what they built in the 20’s and 30’s. Only the 1 percenters of the day could afford them, as is true now with McClarens and such. However for $29,000 you can now buy a lot of well engineered cars that nearly everyone can afford. Good old car days were only for the very rich. My grandfather was a chauffeur so I know what it was like from his pictures and stories. He drove a Duesenberg and a 16 cylinder Cadillac.
Nice Work,
If you can get it!
Jay represents honesty in his words and walk. He seems to be unimpressed by snooty rich guys and phony celebs. I never miss his show, but sorely miss his style on late night TV.
” However for $29,000 you can now buy a lot of well engineered cars that nearly everyone can afford.”
A good point but compliance to Government mandates has a huge impact on car design and therefore price. Exhibit A: Do you think anyone really wants the f’n engine to shut off at every light unless you press a button EVERY TIME YOU GET IN THE CAR.
A button that is being removed so you will have no choice.
My wife worked GM and in the Building she worked at an entire floor was staffed by people who’s job was CAFE compliance and it was a huge space.
Deuseys are nice, but I’ve been hooked on the Cadillac V-16 ever since I heard one being started up. No noise or vibration whatsoever.
Excellent post. Thanks!
What about an adjoining garage to sleep in? :-D
Yep! A real humdinger!
I’ve seen Jay Leno interviewed a few times and he comes across as a good guy, like he hasn’t forgotten who he is.
Saw him on a car show at a California burger joint that the classic car owners cruise on weekends. He said “I’ve seen those people here very often but we don’t go by names. That guy (pointing) is the 56 Chevy guy, that’s the Mustang guy, the Packard family is over there...they may be doctors, lawyers, businessmen or a truck driver or carpenter...doesn’t matter.”
Both feet firmly on terra firma.
