“Steiner, Order Steiner to reverse and counterattack, he will save us!!” Generals, once they told him, Steiner had nothing to counterattack with, because his reinforcements had been ordered elsewhere— by Hitler— that’s when mr. H. lost it (according to eyewitness accounts of the survivors in the bunker, the generals and aides who did get away and were not hung from Nuremberg trials, or who were not shot in the field for failing hitler’s orders (by the special teams of particularly brutal fanatic SS).
Speer’s “Inside the 3rd Reich” is poignant on the subject. For example, Hitler ordered the flooding of the Berlin subway (which sheltered upwards of 95,000 Germans, women and children and old men)- because he did not want the Russians bypassing underground. Flooding was done, drowning every single person before they could react (the few who got out, shot down by German soldiers Volksturms under orders to do so, or by the Russians post raping the women and girls. There is horrific footage of the piled up rotting corpses in the subway, found by the Allies (fairly easily for obvious reasons).
Also,quoted by Speer who suggested the “destroy everything, leave nothing for the enemy” policy would cripple the German people. Hitler replied: “If the war is lost, then the German people do not deserve to survive- those who are real Germans have already died in service to me and the Fatherland”. Absolute destructive lunacy, end stage prior to suicide.
