Even when music has words/lyrics, I rarely listen for them.
And I enjoy my operas without sub-titles.

I listen to classical radio at the office for background noise filter, plus the station is commercial free!! (The real reason)

Vocal pieces aren’t necessarily bad. A Bach cantata, a Schubert mass, or lieder by Schubert, Schumann or Brahms are among my favorites.

The voice is a beautiful and the ultimate melodic instrument. There isn’t an instrument made by man that can compare to the capability of variety and depth of expressions of the human voice. Words can distract from the performance and some of my favorite compositions are performed in languages I don’t speak. On the other hand who doesn’t enjoy a band playing a Sousa John Philip march like Stars and Stripes Forever or Sempre Fidelis

Well I grew up hearing this kind of music ( opera and operettas too ), so for me, it's probably nature AND nurture; though the people who had this type of music on/played it, were brilliant.
Re operas...when I was bitty, my grandmother told me the stories of the operas, then, later, she bought me a book that was all about that and also more. So I too prefer no sub-titles, because they are a distraction and I know what is going on/being sung anyway.

When I'm in the mood for a catchy tune with neither instruments or voice I queue up John Cage's
4:22. Serious passion in this one.

I’m not only one of those strange people that likes elevator music, I also like (and collect) production music...the instrumental background music from commercials, training films, and the like.

for me it depends on what I am doing....if I am busy with work that requires my attention like paperwork... I don’t want anything but classical or jazz but if I am doing a mindless task give me country of folk music preferably something with interesting lyrics. cant stand POP or Rap in most situations they give me headaches .
