I have a nice story to share. We have had tree swallows nesting in a mud and moss nest stuck to our barn window for 3 years. This spring we noticed the nest had fallen and not much was left. The pair of tree swallows showed up and I felt really bad that they may give up on that spot. I woke up the next morning thinking of those coconut fiber baskets. I had to stop at JoAnns for material that morning and when I walked in the door they had a huge hamper filled with those coconut fiber baskets - 50 cents! So I cut one in half and our daughter helped with getting on the ladder and stapling it to the window frame. The very next day we saw the adults flying in and out. Yesterday I asked my husband to take a picture with his phone. There is not much clearance but he is tall and did not need a ladder. Looks like at least 5 chicks and they have plenty of room. The coco basket is about 30 percent bigger than the mud nest they had. If you wanted to encourage tree swallows or barn swallows to nest you might want to try it. I still remember Swampsniper and am glad the threads are still going.
