The article did not say he was going to hunt turkey, but going to a turkey shoot. Big difference in the south.
A turkey shoot is where contestants shoot shotguns at targets, and the person with the bird shot pellet nearest to the bullseye, wins a turkey. I used to use a single barrel, 36 inch goose gun (12 barrel shotgun), that held a tight pattern, and would win in most cases.
Wait just went back and read the entire article. Something is really strange. It definitely says he was going turkey hunting.

Hip injury happened last week, in the middle of turkey season. Today is May 20th. Sounds like he had hip surgery, and then tried to go hunting before his recovery was complete.
This must be spring gobbler season.
