A black high school graduate is suing her Mississippi school district because she claims she lost out on a college scholarship after a white male student with a lower GPA was named salutatorian instead of her.
Olecia James, 18, filed the federal lawsuit against the Cleveland School District last week.
The teenager claims that district officials took away the chance of her being salutatorian - the graduate with the second-best grades - of Cleveland Central High School because they 'feared white flight'.

Asians arent allowed in Cleveland...
That's the real story!
Olecia? Someone once posted a thread with the most ridiculous black names, the kind that will ensure that the person never gets a good job. One woman named her daughter urethra because she thought it was pretty.LOL
From the article, paraphrased, in combining the schools, they weighted the GPA based on the rigor of the courses. Under that weighting, she was not the 2nd highest GPA. She played the race card and got her GPA restored. Now she’s playing it again. I guess she learned the lesson well. The defense would hinge on if the weighting was done using objective, not subjective, measures.
Ehh - if the info in the story is correct I tentatively side with her.
Id have to see the rationale for devaluing the AP ratios at her old (black) school.
Still - I have to question her actual damages. She didnt get the title, sure - but a black woman near the top of her class shouldnt have been denied any scholarships merely for lack of a title.
Jeff Foxworthy could have used that one in his old routine: “If your high school valedictorian had a 2.5 gpa, you might be a redneck.”
I would assume there is a know policy/calculation that determines this prize. If not, shame on the school.
One of my daughters alway whined that from 95% up you received they same GPA score of 4, basically making an “A” the same as an “A+” toward GPA. I told her to stop whining and that she shouldn’t have slacked off Freshman year receiving those 3 nasty B+’s. I was alway on the other end of the spectrum, so she usually saves her rants on this subject with her mother.
When she complained to the school, James said she was told her GPA would be restored to 4.41 but a white male student was still given the title of salutatorian despite his 4.34 average. If these facts are true, it appears she has both a point and a case.
James said she met with the school district again to question why she wasn't given the salutatorian title and they informed her - without explanation - that her GPA had been lowered to 4.33.
Nope, they just took more than one course per semester.
Doh !
That’s what I would like to have seen when I graduated, but unfortunately, a young lady from a much smaller, and we all assumed a less “rigorous” school transferred in to our school her Junior year. We were all rated on a 100 point scale, just taking our marks from each class, and the top three at our school were less than 0.5 points apart.
Turns out she took the #2 spot instead of me. Didn’t like that, but being a white male, I said, “Oh yeah? Watch this.” and proceeded to get a full ride to the school I wanted anyway.
Suck it up, buttercup. Stop whining and prove ‘em wrong.
If youre white youre a second class citizen.
I sympathize with her. Although I am white, I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. I was not part of the “high society” group at my high school. When it came time for graduation, I had the highest gpa, but only by a slight margin. There was a movement by the high school counsellor and a couple of others to knock me off as valedictorian, because one of my classes -band - wasn’t of the same quality as the runner up. I was first chair trumpet. But I was also number one in math and science in the school. The superintendent, who was the grandfather of the runner up, stood by me, and I was named valedictorian. But the high school counsellor was only able to get me a $1,000 scholarship to a community college. I did not take it. I had no bad reputation, but I was not part of the in crowd.
I moved forward, got a four year engineering degree at the University of Kentucky, by working my way through school - without a student loan I might add - and made a success of myself. But I’m still resentful of that ba$tard and those other teachers who were supposed to help under privileged, not the elite.
Haven’t Black girls(and guys)been benefitting from AA for 40 years or so now? You know getting admitted to school ahead of more qualified whites and Asian because of the color of their skin. Did anyone ask Olecia about her opinion of AA programs? I guess when you are the victim and not the beneficiary of discrimination your outlook changes.
I agree any Black girl with a 4.4 GPA would get admitted to any school she desired. I’m not buying the lost scholarship argument. But she is kind of cute
“One woman named her daughter urethra because she thought it was pretty, LOL.”
Probably thought she was naming her for Aretha Franklin.
Thank you. My boys only got “life is hard” from me if they whined about anything. They are outstanding citizens and professionals now.
Im shocked to find Cleveland had a white student
His daddy must be a tard professor at Delta State
Bravo. I once answered an interview question, “What do Engineers do?”, by saying “Engineers solve problems.”
You certainly did.
