I have had a few surgeries, as has the DH, and I have never heard of such incompetence. Somebody is not doing his job right.

I have had a great relationship with this Dr for many years. I first met him when he was taking care of my mother. He is always telling people that I am a Dr because I do study those aspects that I have to deal with, but am far from an expert.
He says that he is not retiring but I suspect that he is slowly backing out. He has taken on a partner and also a nurse practitioner - and he appears to be on his second 'leave' this year. I think you are right, his staff has become careless - too careless. And since I need a fair amount of medical attention they are probably aggravated with me for nagging them.
I cannot change providers right now with surgery pending.
