As the world watched in horror at pictures of the Notre Dame burning, some in China saw another story in the flames: that of retribution.
While the overwhelming reaction in China to Monday's fire was one of sympathy and shock, some could not help but point what they saw as historical parallels, even a bit of justice.
I might be sympathetic to refugees in Lebanon, but the blaze of the Notre Dame only reminds me of the flames of the Old Summer Palace," wrote one user on social media. "Everything has consequences, heavenly cycles, retribution. This applies to both people and country! I only feel awe for karma, and it has nothing to do with morality."
French and British troops burned the Summer Palace to the ground during the Second Opium War in 1860 and it has since become a key element in the "Century of Humiliation" narrative taught in Chinese schools.
During the 19th century, foreign powers, chief among them the UK, invaded the Qing Empire and imposed unfair treaties on it after defeat, seizing Hong Kong and forcing open various "treaty ports," such as Shanghai, to foreign trade.
A "Summer Palace" hashtag on Chinese social platform Weibo attracted close to 100 million views, with many comments about karma or the importance of remembering China's own experience.

Almost to a person, I find Chinese have more respect for France (or rather their romantic illusions about France) than I do.
The Summer Palace was burned in retaliation for the Chinese mistreatment (and murder) of British (largely Indian) soldiers.
The usual reaction in those days would have been to burn Beijing; but the British commander took pity on all the innocent people there, so he selected the summer palace of the dynasty (which was responsible) instead.
Rude to point it out. But it’s actually a pretty fair point. But still, rude. But a closer parallel is the 2017 fire that destroyed the Lingguan Mansion pagoda that was about the same age as Notre Dame.
It was damaged in an earthquake and was undergoing repairs and burned in much the same manner.

The Chinese mistreated invading soldiers who were forcing them to allow the import of opium when the Chinese were openly fighting to stop it. How rude to not be welcoming to your invaders.
Lots of crap in the old world is blown out of proportion, but the opium wars were evil. And for extra fun we still suffer from them today. HSBC was created by the Brits to serve the dope trade. And the hostile China we have today unfolded from that era.
Back then the Brits were basically Sinaloa in China.
No, definitely Chinese. Better educated and sophisticated Chinese travel like civilized people anywhere. But super-cheap group-travel packages are marketed heavily to Chinese peasants and people out in the Provinces. Like most things in China, travel has been hugely commoditized, packaged, degraded and sold. But its also a sign of China's growing wealth. The numbers are huge. Its a real status symbol for these people to travel abroad, and as I said, they have complete unreal, fantastic and story-book visions of what France is.
The destruction of the old Summer Palace was an act of barbarism, but it has nothing to do with the fire at the Cathedral de Notre Dame.
This is retrograde thinking, to the extent that it’s thinking at all.
What a completely dumbarse comparison. And leave it to the junk shovelers at CNN to spread this nonsense.
The fact that Notre Dame was itself the object of trashing by the French themselves in the Reign of Terror, the Cathedral desecrated by renaming it ‘The Temple of Reason’ and being used as a garbage dump for years should relieve one of thinking it is representative of anything but a religious past largely marginalized post-revolution. Leave it to a Maoist to think it’s burning is some kind of karma. If that’s the case should we be expecting the blood of millions be laid at the feet of ingrates like this since they are the natural sympathizers and profligates of Mao’s legacy?
