An Israeli flight attendant has slipped into a coma after contracting measles, according to health officials.
The 43-year-old woman has encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, a well-known and potentially deadly complication of the virus. She was otherwise healthy before getting measles. "She's been in a deep coma for 10 days, and we're now just hoping for the best," said Dr. Itamar Grotto, associate director general of Israel's Ministry of Health. The flight attendant, who works for El Al, the Israeli national airline, might have contracted the virus in New York, in Israel or on a flight between the two, Grotto said. Health authorities do not believed that she spread the virus to anyone on the flights.

(In New York) Cases are occurring mostly among unvaccinated or under-vaccinated Orthodox Jews, particularly children. PEACH or Parents Educating and Advocating for Childrens Health appears to be targeting the Jewish community with misinformation about vaccine safety, citing rabbis as authorities, through a hotline and magazines.
The Somali-American community in Minnesota, the Amish in Ohio, and, more recently, Russian-language immigrants in Washington have recently fallen victim to measles outbreaks as a result of vaccine refusal.
On the rise again, particularly on the West Coast. I am blaming the illegal invaders.
The biggest advice I got when I had the shingles was:
GO TO WAL-MART & buy a bottle of L-Lysine. Take a tablet before you leave the parking lot. The pain of the active nerves was settled down in less than 20 minutes. Amino acid supplement & it calms the nerves.
100 tablets cost me $5.40 plus sales tax. Cheapest & best medicine I ever had.
The worst part. She may have been vaccinated. That means the anti-vaxxers are putting the rest of us in peril.
When we catch illegals, the first thing we should do is vaccinate them. All of them. For everything.
When I was a little kid, everyone knew measles was a serious illness if you got it as an adult...which is why most of the kids I knew had to go play with a kid who had measles.
I learned from my 60-yr-old cousin who, like me, had Chickenpox as a kid, got the shingles vaccine a few years back. Last Summer, she started getting vertigo and throwing up. It got so bad, she had to have someone stay with her and was thinking she would need to go to assisted living. Finally, one of the doctors knew that the shingles vaccine presents the virus presenting as shingles, but will often go into the ear.
Hmmm, that person who’s infected 39 people in Michigan was on a visit from NY. Was he/she on a flight to NY with this flight attendant?

I was born at a tine when Sabres and MiGs were shooting at each other over Pyongyang. Despite being aware that contracting measles would bring lifelong immunity, no one actually wanted to get the disease because of the severe and dangerous symptoms.
Measles swept through my family in the summer of 1960 with devastating effect. Although I got an injection of a serum that was apparently an early version of a measles vaccine, it was ineffective, and the virus eventually sidelined me for two weeks.
For me it was around 1962. All of us got it, eventually. And yeah, I was out for a while.
But to be honest, I get Measles, Mumps and Chicken Pox confused now.
