And have discovered two things;

The store bought topicals are expensive

and

the home made stuff seems to operate off of a garlic smell the dog eats.

I found a real simple rice recipe with garlic that sure sounds good, but ...

FREEPERS know everything.

Does anyone have a suggestion that they know works ?

If you really want to get rid of them, you have to treat the yard. Otherwise, a good flea and tick collar usually works. Not perfectly, but they do work. Also, keep the yard mowed and weed-eated. Ticks love tall grass.

My grand father learned me to play the guitar with the chords to “My Dog Has Fleas”

You are on your own ... Can he sing or dance. Rub his ass across the carpet...hump a leg?

Rose and Rose geranium oil (therapeutic grade Dilute six to one) works but your dog will smell like roses.

Lemon grass works but I do not recommend as the smell attracts bees.

Give him a bath using Dawn detergent (not a lot) . . . the ticks will fall off.

I use diatomaceous earth (food grade). Just don’t wave the powder substance so that the dog can breathe it in. I also use the Mercola Flea and Tick Collar. www.Mercola.com I’m not big on chemicals around the house so I use diatomaceous earth outside as well. I use it in my garden, too.

I don’t know about the efficacy of home remedies. Revolution for dogs prevents all kinds of bad things. It’s worth the money, IMO.

1 go to pharmacy and get small container of powdered sulfur
2 1 jar of petroleum jelly
3 a bottle of flea and tick spray
4 pair of rubber gloves
5 mix about half cup of sulfur and 2 tablespoon full of petroleum jelly, then about 2 tablespoons of flea and tick spray, mix well, put on rubber gloves, rub small amount of mixture into fur, head to tail.
6 keep your dog in area penned up for a couple hours,do not give them a bath, just wipe down any excess mixture, then take a rag and wipe him down. Should kill everything on him and keep him clean for couple weeks. This also works on mange, only don’t wipe them down, keep them penned for two to three days, and apply mixture everyday for the two or three days then give them a good bath.
I used this on three dogs that had mange and three days later they were clean.

I use Bug Off garlic. I live in rural Texas and my dog has never had a flea or tick in 3 years. I use the powder but they also sell a tablet. I sprinkle the powder on her morning food. She is on no other flea/tick treatment. I buy the product for horses because it is cheaper. Exact same powder as for dogs (per the manufacturer) just a bigger container. They will even send you a dog scoop if you ask.

I bought a tick removal tool at the vet - I think it’s called Tick Off - looks like a plastic tablespoon with a notch in it, and works very well popping them out whole.
