The ‘slaves’ provided their master/mistress with collateral.
For example, Allison Mack had to provide ‘collateral’ to Raniere as a show of her faith and trust in him. That included several things. Dirty pictures that supposedly would end her acting career, a contract that any child she ever had would belong to Raniere (as a show of devotion to him), a contract to relinquish her property to him if she ever ‘betrayed’ him, undated letters to authorities about her parents and siblings with false accusations that would get them in trouble.
These are the kinds of things Keith demanded of his slaves. The slaves, in turn, would recruit slaves for themselves and demand similar ‘collatoral’.
The collateral was intended to systematically destroy the slaves’ professional standing, economic situation, family relationships, etc.
All Raniere and his top lieutenants had to do was threaten to release a slave’s collateral and their lives would be destroyed.
Or, they could just do what they were told. Which is what most of them did. That meant anything from yard work, to sexual favors, to criminal acts.
Mack had a google drop-box set up so her slaves would post their monthly ‘collateral’ and she would pass it on to Raniere. It is believed that all the slave-owners did the same thing.
Just one of many reasons why seeing Nancy, Lauren and Allison get plea deals and probably light sentences is so stomach turning.
Raniere’s sex charges stemmed from ‘collateral’ that he stored from a 15-year old girl. I’m sure there’s more, but that was the predicate act for the charges.
The defense will argue that the collateral was voluntarily provided. The prosecution will argue that, once provided, the collateral trapped people via blackmail.
I see, so the slaves had to provide material aka “collateral” blackmailing themselves.
What kind of person would even think this crap up.
