That was the whole thing with the Kenny therapy (basically, swimming). My mother had polio as a child and survived it. She could breathe but couldn’t walk...my grandfather, who was a fisherman in New England, tied her to the back of the boat in the harbor and had her “swim,” that is, try to move her arms and legs. This was an old French treatment for paralysis, incidentallly.

After a year, she was walking again.

Sister Kenny was from Australia and self-trained but observant and saw what worked.
